Several: Clothes

by PierreZA

There are many shops in Kathmandu (especially Thamel) and Pokhara where you can buy all your clothing needs for your trip. It is best to shop around, and haggle hard for the best price (there is a lot of competition). It is important though to fit everything before you buy, as the size labeling is not very trustworthy. Anything from hiking boots, scarfs, gloves, windbreakers, jackets, shirts etc Variable

Pilgrims books.: Everything under one roof.

by halfbeat

If you are looking to make your souvenir shopping easy while in Nepal, head for Pilgrims books in Kathmandu. They are likely to have everything you need under their one roof. You can find anything from books and maps to paper goods, pashmina, tea, jewellery and all sorts of other things. If your eyes are bigger than your bags, then they will even post things to your home for you to save you carrying it for the duration of your stay in Nepal.Quality is good on everything, and in the books section they have some brilliant titles that are rare or out of print. They have videos and cd's, handicrafts, incense, daily newspapers, and even a restaurant where you can feed and read at the same time. They will take several currencies too incase you run out of rupees. Just depends on how much you want to buy.

Do you buy your trekking gear at home or in Nepal

by into-thin-air

Down jackets and Down Sleeping-Bags represent excellent value, OK the quality is not quite as good as you might find in the “West” But they still keep you Very Warm – the only down-side is that you may well look like a chicken yourself as they do tend to shed a few feathers ;-)If you are only going to use your Down jacket and Down Sleeping-Bag for one trek thay you also have the option of hiring them, Most trekking shops in both Kathmandu and Pokhara hire out trekking gear. You can find an adequate pair of trekking poles for less than $20, My friend bought a pair earlier this year then we trekked Upper Mustang and they survived – she also bought a Chinese “Therma-Rest” copy for about $50 and the quality of that was surprisingly good, it even had a brass valve !! and that also survived the trek.Lots of rip-off “Gortex” equipment – it will keep you dry enough but don’t expect it to breath,...

Chhetrapati Pharmacy: Good Pharmacy in Kathmandu

by into-thin-air

A Good pharmacy is Chhetrapati Pharmacy on Chhetrapati five ways on the edge of Thamel – a five minute walk from The Kathmandu Guest House – I have used this pharmacy many times over the last 12 years and the pharmacist is both knowledgeable and helpfulFortunately for me I didn’t have the occasion to have to go to Chhetrapati Pharmacy on this my 2008 trip but I did walk past it and am pleased to report that it is still open for business Whatever Drugs you want you can simply buy over the counter in Nepal. However it’s best to be aware that a lot of the drugs on sale are replicas from India, Most of these are fine, But I always take along a broad spectrum antibiotic as well as Flagyl for treatment of Gardia – But this is just my personal choice !!Another thing to do is Always check the dates on whatever you buy, Often cheap out-of-date medication is off-loaded in Nepal but this has never...

The small shops: Use them or loose them in Pokhara

by into-thin-air

You will notice that outside of most of the hotels in Lakeside, Pokhara, There are a lot of small shops selling bottled water, toilet paper, soft drinks and beer, snacks and sometimes operate a laundry service.Myself, I try and support these little shops by giving them a bit of trade, spreading the little money that I tend to have around a bit. These little shops rely on tourists and often help subsidise a small farm as the one in the photo. Without these small farms Pokhara would loose a lot of its charm.I think it is a case of use them or loose them, to loose them would be a shame so try and buy a few bits and pieces from them would be my advice

“Deep Opticals”: Great Optician / Glasses Shop in Pokhara

by into-thin-air

If you are looking for a Good Optician in Pokhara then go to “Deep Opticals” in Mahendra Pool,They are a very professional outfit, My friend Helga broke her glasses and took them to “Deep Opticals” and they took the lenses out of the broken frames and re-cut them, then fitted them into new frames, and for less than $10. I also bought a pair of ready specs from them, The quality seems ok and they were only $5.Give them a try
