Mesmerize: Buy at Ease

by iamkushal

This is wonderful, that i have Visited In Nepal. It is Located In Patan, Towards the South of the capital "Kathmandu". What i Found special about it is It has many varieties for Mens Clothing in Comparision to the other shop located in Patan. The shop seller the Men's Apparel From the Tshirt and From Shirts of Hight quality imported Directly from Hong Kong and Bangkok. You can Buy anything for a Men's Apparel . Including from the Under garments, Like Jockey . You can even buy the Original PUMA shoes. You can pleasantly buy pants and tshirt.

How to find good ones...: Statues of gods

by Saagar

First; read the book "Shopping for Buddhas" - it's hilarious! You can get it in KTM, too. You find statues all over, but beware of quality. Best quality items and highest prices you will find in upmarket places along Durbar Marg down from the palace. In Jyatha and Thamel streets you will find several places with more modest quality and prices (still fine, though), and at Basantapur you will find both upmarket stores and the open air market full of statues and things. But the nicest places to find such items are the lower streets from Chhetrapati toward Durbar Sq in Kathmandu, where there are outlets selling to temples and monastries, and in the back streets of Lalitpur/Patan where the gods are closest to their makers... Make sure to get a receipt and in case of old-looking statues, a licence/certificate from the Ministry of Archaeology or whatever. Be serious about this part as luggage...

Thankas...

These are stunning Tibetan paintings, depicting various scenes of Buddha and Buddhism. They are painted by hand using incredibly thin brushes, they are amazing. You can visit dedicated Thanka school, where you get to see the students at work and really get a good description of the history behind the painting. I would say at least $25 for a smallish good quality one.

Hiking gear...

by TracyG

Don't worry if you can't get everything you need for your hiking trip at home, Nepal has everything that you could ever need at very very cheap prices. But do be aware at the very cheap prices the goods are very unikely to be genuine!

Map House: Best maps for trekking and work

by Saagar

S.S. Center MAP HOUSE in Thapathali in Kathmandu is the easiest outlet for the HMG/Finnida map series that cover entire Nepal in 1:50.000 and 1:20.000 (the latter for densely populated areas). These maps are accurate and easy to work with and cheap, so you can cut and paste to recompose a trekking map for your purpose. The shop itself and the other maps they carry is not that interesting compared to the array you can have up in Thamel. The maps cost about 150 Rs each which is a steal for such good quality maps.

Anywhere you see people selling stuffs: Shopping time!

by juliewong

Thamel in kathmandu city centre has lots to offer. It's a touristy area with logdings along the streets in Thamel Tourist stuffs like bags, trinkets, clothes, arts and crafts. Thangka is a popular art in nepal. Thangkas are hand painted and often depict buddhism elements; ie; life story of buddha, a human's lifecycle, mandala (medidation art), etc...Yeah, bought couple of T-shirts too. Trinkets, yeah loads of it at everycorner of kathmandu's tourist spots. Cheap too. Bought some sling bags for 100 rupees (for 4). Pokhara has plenty of shops to look out for too. But prices are bit more steep here than in Kathmandu.

Nepal Tea House: The best tea shop in Nepal

by Saagar

This shop with a modest entrance close to the Indrachowk-New Road roundabout in Basanthapur is a major outlet for tea in Kathmandu. The owner family is directly involved in tea production in Ilam District in the far east of Nepal. The main customers are not tourists, but locals and bulk buyers. This is where I buy my tea for myself and in gift packages and bags for friends and relatives back home. You will find much of the same in the Thamel area, but in this shop it is somewhat chaper, you can be certain of the quality, and you can buy bulk and they will vaccum pack on the spot. Moreover, they give you the opportunity to smell your way through and explain to you the varieties and differences of teas in Nepal and from other parts of Asia where they import from. The best of them all is Darjeeling First Flush at NPR 3000 per kg. That's a fraction of the price overseas. The second best is an...

Several: Temple bells

by Saagar

Pretty much the same shops that sell brass and other metals' items for households also sell temple goodies. So the same advice as for the "brass lamp" entry is valid here. Look along Asan Tole and in metal shops in Bhaktapur and Patan. Also in Thamel's lower and upper parts, but these are antique shops (not necessarily the goods, though!) and pricey. Temple bells come in varius sized and tones. You have to find, see and hear what you like. You can get them any size you want. The last one I brought home weighed 1.3 kg and cost me 800 NRS. I now use it as a door bell. Wakes up the entire neighbourhood, so I will have to reconsider the placement. You find them more or less decorated, and a little Ganesh statue on top is a very common thing to see. Ring/clang the bell and you inprove your luck.

Several: Brass lamps

by Saagar

Several shops along Asan Tole, New Road and Durbar marg (Kathmandu) and in Patan and Bhaktapur sell brass, copper and other metal , temple, household and decoration items. While on the heavy side for an around-the-world traveller, it is worth checking these places out if returning straight home from Kathmandu. Brass oil lamps are made on basis of an ancient standard, and vary in detail. Look around before you buy. Chances is that you will get a good, regular price if you are patient and polite. No piece is alike, so check out details to see what you prefer. You can hang them from the ceiling or outdoors under the rafters (if any!) and light them up with tea candles or other stubby candles if you don't want to use oil. They draw a lot of admiration and are really nice to look at. And they are totally genuine, in the sense they were hand made, not fo tourists, but for a local market. Below...

Glass bead shops on Asan tole, Kathmandu: Cheap glass pearls for the folks back home?

by Saagar

There is a cluster of stores selling glass beads for necklaces on Asan tole in Kathmandu. Here you can have glass bead necklaces custom made or ready made at your heart's delight. They come in many sizes and colors. The main, or original sales concept is sales to women who will have their marriage necklace made (see my tip on local customs). But it's certainly not limited to this.As with bangles, this trade is done mainly by muslims, so in their little stores you find verses from the Koran framed on the wall. Have a look at the variety and find out what you like in this world of glass beads. Then compose your own, and it will be made in front of your eyes. From very little to a bit more. But it's not right-out expensive for any type of glass beads - it's not pearls, after all.
