Khukuri House: The REAL Khukuri knife shop

by Saagar

This shop was the original (est. 1991 in Thamel), and to my opinion maintains the best quality and selection of the varieties of the Khukuri knives. They are also an official supplier to the R.N.Army.Khukuris come in a great variety, and here you can find one that suits your luggage and wallet and needs from sword size down to nearly pocket size.Khukuris are originally home made, and even if somewhat industrialized, still retains a home-made and local flavour. The industrialization was needed to provide for the Nepal and Gurkha armies, but set a standard for quality.Local adaptions abound, and there is probably no such thing as the original khukuri. This shop, however, does its best to tell you of the various knives and the purposes they are used for. Better buy your knife here rather than from street peddlers who sell fancy decorated knives of dubious quality. I have over the years...

Numerous shops...: Carpets, blankets and shawls

by Saagar

A great thing to bring back from Nepal are textile handicrafts. Besides clothing, tailor-made, I would have taken a look at Tibetan-style carpets (see separate tip), blankets such as the Gurung raedi (photo, foreground) and western Nepal's hard-woven sitting mats, and shawls of different types (see my tip on shawls).Carpets are heavy, nothing you want to drag around Asia, but fine if you are returning straight home. Blankets is in a middle weight and cumbersome category, while shawls are lightweight, easy to pack, useful on the road, and extemely good value and good gifts on the road, in Nepal and upon your return home. A good carpet is up to 300 USD and as low as 70-80. Blankets are cheap, shawls differ a lot depending on quality, but for 1800 NRS you will get a good quality one.

Tibetan Buddhist Thankas

by SumTingWong

Thankas are intricate Tibetan paintings made from thin hair paintbrushes. Their original use is for meditation, but now a’ days they have become very popular pieces d'art. Remember to go for quality and detail, don't fall for the rip-offs. There are special Thanka schools in Kathmandu and the best one is in Bhaktapur (highly recommended, or at least take the tour from the principle). There you will get the best quality for the best prices. Prices differ depending of size, quality, and framing (some are stitched where as some are just painted). The cheapest good-quality one you can get would be for about US$15. Medium to Small US$25, medium US$50, Medium-larger US$75, and large ones can go anywhere from US$90 to US$2000.

For Repair/Sale: "Repair 1"

by Saagar

Torn backpacks, clothing, straps, cracked locks etc? Need new hip belt for your back pack?No problem, this shop fixes it. Bring your stuff and it'll get done.If you have an idea of new gear to be made, bring your ideas and they'll consider it.Owners: Buddha and Rajan Dulal. The shop advertises they'll fix just about anything that smells of sports goods, nylon, gore tex and canvas. They also produce some goods according to order. In my experience, the price is very low given the good service they offer.

Various shops around Durbar Square: Thanka

by GillianMcLaughlin

There are many shops selling Thankas in and around Kathmandu. Thankas are paintings, traditionally created by Buddhist monks as a form of meditation. They are amazingly intricate, and a good one is a fantastic souvenir to take back. The most intricate depict the "Wheel of Life", the passage of the soul to Nirvana: seven rings arranged according to the phases of passage, for example fire, lotus etc. The secret is to find a good thanka and to know what you're looking for. Prices vary enormously, as does quality. Some come from real Buddhist monks, some are done by students in special schools and others are rip-offs.The main give-away is the amount of detail. They are incredibly intricate. On the Wheel of Life, check the little buddhas: if they have individual faces and discernable fingers on their hands, you are on the right track. The bigger they are, the more work has gone into them and...

shri kalchakra mandala thanka workshop: thanka.. beautiful tibetan buddhist paintings..

by eelaine

thanka is the tibetan buddist painting used for meditation.. this can be seen everywhere in nepal especially in the more touristy places.. the more commonly found paintings are the mandala, the wheel of life and the life of buddha.. basically, what you buy and how much depends on how much you think the paintings are worth.. we bought a thanka from this little shop in pokhara, owned by a really friendly and mild mannered artist named buddha lama.. we found his paintings to be very fine and detailed compared to most that we've seen.. we paid npr5100 for a large painting of the mandala with a very nice traditional cloth frame..

Buy the Tibetan Incarnations CD: Buy A Buddhist Chanting CD to take home with you!

by butterfly_girl

This is not a shop, but a CD called "Tibetan Incarnations" that you will hear over and over again while you are in Nepal. It is the most beautiful CD of monks chanting. I heard this CD constantly at the Boudhanath stupa, in Pokhara and all over Bhaktapur. I am so happy that I bought a copy and brought it home with me. Everytime I put it on I am momentarily transported to mystical Nepal. You will find it for sale all over Nepal. $1.00 to $2.00 US

Thamel Bargains

by SumTingWong

Thamel street and the Thamel backpacker area of Kathmandu will offer you great deals on just about everything. Thamel supplies everything from cheap, decent quality packs, sleeping bags, etc.. to mandalas, signing bowls, pashmina, carpets, clothing, prayer flags and wheels, bags, and everything else made in Nepal. Prices are low due to sheer competition between the numerous merchants. However, beware of beggars, pickpockets, and weird people offering advice of hashish, do not even make eye contact with beggars and street venders unless you want to buy their product. Good deals on wooden carvings, mandalas, pashmina, custom clothing, t-shirts, Tibetan stuffs, khukuri knives, etc...For pottery head to Bhaktapur, and for metalwork head to Patan. IMPORTANT PRICE LIST TO KNOW: - If you are in Nepal during the off-season (June-August), venders are desperate for a sell and will go much farther...

Everywhere: Outdoor clothes

by perfil

Shops in Thamel are probably the best place to buy clothes made of yak or goat wool, fleese or even gore tex-like fabric. You can also buy them in the mountains and carry back with you if you don't mind extra load. Hats and sweaters and socks are very warm and will remind you of Nepal for a long time. Thamel is also a center for locally made outdoor clothes. It is very cheap and many things like fleese jackets or gloves are no worse than something sold for huge money in the west. I still have few fleese jackets, socks and windproof pants I bought in Nepal 5 years ago, and they serve me well. I wouldn't trust some Nepal-made essential equipment though - you don't want your backpack to fall apart in the middle of Himalaya. A hat should cost about 100-150 rupees (1USD =76 rupees), a sweater is 400 or so and socks are 50-100. Double fleese jacket also 400, dawn jackets vary by quality...
