Pilgrims Bookstore: Pilgrimage to a Fantastic Bookstore

by jadedmuse

Like any good bookstore, Pilgrims Bookstore engages you from the moment you step in the door. Specializing in (but not limited to) books on India, Nepal and Tibet, its shelves are lined with everything from the perfect coffee table book to the most arcane published material....there's even a cozy little cafe toward the back if you need to take a break. You CANNOT go to Kathmandu without visiting this gem of a place. I promise you, it's worth it!! In addition to published materials, Pilgrims offers calendars, posters, videos, rare and out-of-print books, and assorted handicrafts (I couldn't leave there without some really nice, hand-woven pot-pouri "meditation" pillows which were actually a really good value and made great gifts). If you can't visit Pilgrims in person, then check out their website. Prices are reasonable.

Tibetan Thangkas and Tibetan Carpets

by jadedmuse

I would definitely recommend buying the Tibetan thangkas in Nepal - painted by Tibetan refugees, of course. Same goes for the Tibetan carpets. With regard to the thangkas - you can get them in Tibet, but you might actually pay more for them PLUS, the Chinese regulate the artistic themes and they get a piece of the financial action. I didn't like that. On the other hand, the Tibetans who paint them in Nepal are free to express themselves as they wish, and this comes through in the drawings. We bought three beautiful thangkas on Jyatha Street, not too far from the Hotel Utse. I wish I could remember the name of the place - I only remember that they were very soft-sell Tibetans who were both kind and talented. Also, for those interested in Tibetan carpets, I recommend going to an actual carpet institution where you can get a brief tour of the facility and see them weaving - all the money...

Everything is cheaper in Pokhara

by DocJules

Everybody starts their vacation to Nepal in Kathmandu and it's very tempting to buy souvenirs, gifts, etc whilst you're there. My simple advice is don't! If you've got Pokhara as a destination on your itinerary then wait until you get there. We found that papiermache boxes were up to 10x cheaper!

Shop 'Till You Drop!

by travelinxs

There's plenty of goodies to find in Nepal. Here's a few ideas;ClothingThere is an abundant of cheap rip-off clothing to be had, convenient if you're coming from India and wish to go trekking. 'North Face' appears to be the flavour of the month. A reasonable fleece costs about 600Rs / £6.00 / $9.00. A good jacket (ignore the 'Gortex' labelling) 3000Rs / £30.00 / $45.00. What you will NOT find easily are quality boots. Try and sort out your footwear before you arrive. EquipmentThere are a couple of stores selling the genuine article if you hunt around (usually jetisoned from a previous expedition), otherwise again, much will be rip-offs. Personaly, I would not risk buying sunglasses as there is (to my knowledge) no way of determining the UV specification. Buy mountaineering glases from home (that should only permit approx. 12% of available light).Cameras / FilmI would never buy a camera...

Shopping in Thamel

by yumiyun

Thamel area is full of gift shops (besides hotels and restaurants). Most of them carry pretty much similar things. Jewelry shops with silver and semi-precious stone ornaments (particularly turquoise). Clothing shop with printed pants, embroidary shirt etc. Also rice paper products such as lanterns and calenders seem to be popular. You can find both Nepali and Tibetan crafts here since there are many Tibetans around. King of barganing pays less.

Gems, thangka and antiques...

by Peter_P

Shopping can be very rewarding and exciting in Kathmandu. There are numerous tourist shops on the main streets and in the hotel arcades brimming with tempting jewelry, statues, and other typical Nepalese handicraft. Thangka is one of the best buys in Nepal. Each place has its specially product which is unique. Bhaktapur, for instance, is the place to buy pottery. The Traditional Craftsman's Colony in Patan is a famous center for Nepalese handicraft. You may get carved- wooden items while at Patan. As for jewelry, buyers can opt for loose gems or custom-made items.Besides handicraft, Nepal is also a good place for genuine luxury goods. With a host of departmental stores and shopping plazas offering international brand-name products, Kathmandu has become a haven for the serious shopper. Browsers will enjoy the city's numerous traditional markets that overflow-with vegetables, fruits and...
