The BIG ONE - Sagarmatha, Qomolangma or Mt.Everest

by tremendopunto

I had a planned to go on the Everest Trek, all the way via Kala Pattar to The Everest Base Camp....but the change of temperatures from the Indian Thar desrt to Kathmandu during monsoon gave me a bad cold with fever. So I had to cancel my trekking dream.I had everything planned out in detail:12 days from Lukla to EBC and back with a very conservative and hence safe altitude gain of 300 vetrical meters on average per day to Gorak Shep(5170m).From Kathmandu you take the plane to Lukla (2850m) to begin with a trek to Monjo(2815m) on the 1st day.On the 2nd day you climb up to Namche Bazaar(3450m),where you take a rest also on the 3rd day to acclimatize to the altitude.Day 4 goes from Namche to Tengboche (3860m) followed by Periche(4280m)on the fifth and Thokla (4620m) on the 6th day. From there you head to Lobuche(4940m)on day 7.On day eight you should reach Gorak Shep, the highest sleeping...

KANCHENJUNGA-the 3rd highest mountain in the world

by tremendopunto

In the far east of Nepal, on the Indian border to Sikkim, you can find the KANCHENJUNGA. With its 8.586m or 28.169ft this is the third highest mountain on the planet.I was lucky to catch an amazing view on this beautiful peak on my flight to Bhutan. On the pics you can see the different peaks of the Kanchenjunga - there are five peaks of which four reach above 8.400m.These mountains really catch you!

Paragliding - Pokhara - Galyan

by mbatsheba

One of the nicest places to be in Nepal is POKAHRA. A little town which has lots of restaurants and shops. Pretty clean if you compare it with Khatmandu. People are friendly and it also has a lake and a little hill about 700 ft high. This is the place where my partner enjoyed his paragliding. Paragliders from all over the world who visit Nepal normally would also visit Pokhara for some additional flying. What is also convenient about this place is that there are travel agents that arranges the transport for the paraglidersto the top of the hill for a small fee.Lots of little kids around that always want to help fold the gliders....double work for us ofcourse but in the spirit of Nepal, we let them for again a tiny remuneration which sure brings smiles to their little faces and makes our day!!!

shivayura national park

by MrBill

Shivayuri National Park is an easy one to get to as it is right on the outskirts of Kathmandu. That means you can reach it by taxi and then walk from there. What is there to see? Well, you can climb through the park in the hills surrounding Kathmandu until you reach the Buddhist temple at the top where many female monks live. This will take you about two hours, and is an easy first day if you are a little jet lagged from your long journey. On top you will have commanding views of Kathmandu itself. On the way down you can stop by Vishnu’s water temple where he is sleeping on a bed of snakes. As an introduction to both Hindu and Buddhist temples this is not a bad start. Enjoy.

the first flight into Lukla

by MrBill

In 1964 Captain Emil Wick from Switzerland made the first flight from Kathmandu to Lukla landing his Canadian built Twin Otter overwing airplane on what would have been at that time, literally, the side of a mountain making him one of Nepal’s first ever aviation pioneers. This opened up the Khumba region of Nepal to groups wanting to climb its peaks in the wake of Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tansing’s first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. Up until that time everything had to be carried in by porters or by yaks. Expeditions took months. Photos of the early pioneers of Nepal’s peaks can be found in a collection kept at the Sherpa Museum above Namche Bazar on the trail to Mt. Everest. The flight into Lukla that makes this possible was due to courageous fliers like Cpt. Wick and men like him. Enjoy.

garden of dreams

by MrBill

The Garden of Dreams and the nearby Kaiser Library are an oasis of quiet in the middle of Kathmandu not far from the city center and the Royal Palace. Both can be reached by foot. Admission to the garden is 160 rupees while the library is free. However, the library, which contains a real, stuffed tiger, is only open Sundays through Fridays and is closed on Saturdays. The opening hours are 10.00 to 15.00, while the gardens are opened longer. The Barkha and Basanta Pavilons in the gardens were long left abandoned and partially destroyed before being rescued and renovated more recently. The style of architecture is turn of the last century colonial. The gardens themselves are immaculately kept. It is a nice place to hang out on a warm sunny day and take a few hours away from the daily hum of the traffic outside its walls. Enjoy!

Sherpa Museum near Namche Bazar

by MrBill

The Sherpa Museum consists of roughly four separate parts. A typical sherpa lodge. A Buddhist prayer room. A picture gallery depicting daily sherpa life in the village past and present. And an Everest mountain museum dedicated to the pioneers of air travel in Nepal as well as the climbers and sherpas that have immortalized Nepal as the home of Mt. Everest. It is definately worth a look if you are in the neighborhood already in any case. Entrance as far as I know was free or a very minimum cost paid for by our guide and it takes in all about one hour or so to see everything. It can easily be combined with a hike from Namche Bazar to Khunde and Khumjung in one day as you aclimatize to the altitude on your way from Lukla to Mt. Everest Base Camp.

Chitwan Nationalpark

by nepalgoods

The swamps on the border between India and Nepal were once a natural border, which not many people crossed. Tigers and mosquitos where the guardians. Only few villages were build in this area. Today this area is a beautiful Nationalpark, where you can see tigers (when you are lucky!), rhinos (certainly), crocodiles (Gavial - sometimes) and many beautiful birds (always).Chitwan Nationalpark

Kathmandu

by jadedmuse

I can recall hearing Bob Seger's famous song as a child, and even then - having no idea where Kathmandu was - I understood it was an exotic place faraway, with a mysterious hold on Westerners. It took me almost thirty years to experience it for myself...a lifelong dream. In some ways, it surpassed my expectations, and in other ways, I was a little underwhelmed. All in all, it is a place I would love to return to one day. I hope it will be as I remember it. The things to do and see in Kathmandu are numerous. The "don't miss" items are obvious: Patan, Pashupatinath, Bhaktapur, Durbar Square in Kathmandu City proper, Boudanath, and Swayambunath. Hotels are inexpensive and if you're in the Thamel area, everything seems to be within walking distance. From Kathmandu, you can easily take day exploratory excursions to nearby towns. We didn't have the chance, but I will do so when I return....A...

Beautiful Bhaktapur

by tremendopunto

Bhaktapur - or the "City of Devotees" - is one of the three Kingdom Cities, next to Patan and Kathmandu. It is certainly one of the main highlights of the kathmandu Valley you cant afford to miss. Stroll around the alleys and squares full of magnificent monuments and temples with rich woodcarving decorations and inhale the history! The complete town is ONE big museum!
