Trekking in the Himalayan hills & mountains

by victorwkf

This will be an unforgettable experience trekking in the highest places on earth. There are many treks ranging from short, easy ones to long, tough ones. Famous treks include the Annapurna Base Camp trek, Annapurna Circuit, Jomoson trek, Langtang trek, Everest-Kala Pattar trek. Other more remote trek include Dhaulagiri trek, Manaslu trek, Kanchenjunga trek, Mustang trek and trekking to remote areas in western Nepal e.g. Rara lake and the Dolpo area..

Gupteshwor Mahadev cave, Pokhara

by into-thin-air

I have been to Pokhara several times during the last ten years and had never noticed this cave !! I think that it has only been open to the public for around four years now but it is easy to miss it and I haven't heard a mention of it in the guide books ??Very close to the Tibetan refugee camp ( on the same road ) and also close to Devi Falls this is a really great way to visit Devi falls, You go down into a natural depression in the ground where there is the entrance to the cave, a guide will take you down and you come out just downstream of the falls and get a wonderful view of Devi falls falling into the hole in the ground from below !!a Unique way to view the falls !!Don't forget your camera -- I did and didn't manage to get back -- there are some excellent photo opportunities and I missed them !!!Entrance fee is a very reasonable 50 NR and a small tip for your guide is recommended...

Take the cable-car to Manakamana Temple

by into-thin-air

Just a few kilometres on the Kathmandu side of Muglin is the cable-car to Manakamana temple -- This is the Only cable-car in Nepal and Really is a Great Ride !! True it is a little expensive at $12 per head for the return trip But it is Austrian built and Well maintained !! Great Views and a Great way to either break your journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara or stop off when rafting the Trisuli River. Manakamana Temple it's self isn't that impressive but it's location is -- Fantastic views and well worth the visit !!!I aren't sure if the price has gone up since 2004 but other than that I am 100% Sure that the information in this tip is still as good now as when I wrote it in 2004 -- Happy Travels in Nepal -- Rob

The Fire on the Water Temple at Muktinath

by into-thin-air

Ten years ago when I crossed Thorung La I must have walked right passed this Temple in the dusk and didn't even know it was there !!! Then Helga told me about it whilst we were trekking up the kali Gandaki Valley ( Thank You Helga !! ) -- The " Fire on the Water Temple " and Yes you can actually see the fire on the top of the water in a hole in the temple !! Well Worth seeing -- This Temple is part Hindu and part Buddhist -- again something unusual !! Don't be like me and walk straight past it as it is quite an incredible sight !!!!I am 100% Sure that the information in this tip is still as good now as when I wrote it in 2004 -- Happy Travels in Nepal -- Rob

Bouddhanath!

by butterfly_girl

The Bouddhanath Stupa is brimming with activity. This stupa is a must see to experience the lovely Buddhist, spiritual vibe. You will see Buddhist monks in their red robes and worshippers making a circle around the stupa. You will hear CDs of monks chanting throughout. There are prayer flags surrounding the stupa and it is a wonderful place to sit and watch all the activity or close your eyes and meditate. ~OM~

Get off the Tourist Route

by MartinQuilty

There are so many treks in Nepal, i suggest staying away from the well trodden and heading into the areas less frequented. Some of my best times were walking back down through the Helambu Valley. For five days i didn't see another westerner, it's a far cry from the wealthy foreigners being choppered in for their 'mountain trek' and the people you meet are far more friendly.Sure it's a little strange squatting on the toilet and then turning on the tap above your head for a cold stream of water to shower and flush at the same time, but it's what Nepal really is.

Visit the town of Pokhara

by victorwkf

Pokhara is a peaceful town with the 2nd largest population in Nepal. It is located along the banks of Lake Phewa (about 7 hours drive west of Kathmandu), and it a base for treks to the Annapurna, Jomoson, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu regions. More photos and tips are at my VT Pokhara page.

Mount Everest, The Highest Point on Earth

by victorwkf

Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world at 8848 metres, and is one of the highlights of Nepal. You can see it either by trekking in the Solu Khumbu region, or by taking a Himalayan mountain flight from Kathmandu. The photo on the left shows Mount Everest and surrounding mountains. More information is available at my VT Mount Everest page. More photos and tips are at my VT Mount Everest page.

Admire or perhaps buy the Budhhist paintings

by victorwkf

Admire or perhaps buy the Buddhist paintings if you could afford them. When you are walking around, there are some stores selling Buddhist paintings which are hand painted to the finest and delicate details. Do have a look at these impressive art. They are very expensive because a lot of work is being put into each painting.
