Join in the Bunga-Dya Jatra festival

by victorwkf

Join in the Bunga-Dya Jatra festival (Red Machhendranath). If you are in Kathmandu or Patan during 28 April, then you can join in the Bunga-Dya Jatra festival like what I did. This interesting festival is to celebrate the Buddhist deity of rain, and is honoured with a chariot procession through Patan which has a tradition of about 1,200 years !

Buddhist Monastery on Tibetan New Year or Anytime!

by butterfly_girl

While in Nepal you must visit a Buddhist Monastery. There are so many there that I really can't recommend one, but if you can make it to one on or around Tibetan New Year it is a beautiful, exquisite experience! I was able to sit inside a monastery in Pokhara and listen to 40 monks chanting... with bells ringing and drums beating. It was so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes.

Shiva Ratri festival in Pashupatinath

by butterfly_girl

Shiva Ratri is the festival of Shiva's Night, a Sadhu and Hindu festival of the outlandish and divine. We took a taxi to the festival and the sights and sounds were mind blowing. saints, sadhus and mystics filled the grounds. It was like being transported to another mystical world. I had never seen anything even close to the visions I was seeing. There were groups and groups of long bearded, dreadlocked Sadhus huddled in mass, smoking pot with eyes glazed over and a mysterious look about them. They say that thousands of pilgrims come to the sacred festival, like a Hindu version of Mecca. As we walked the steps, these mystical men would just look at us with half open eyes, not really in the world. We later found out that Sadhus and infants are the only Hindus that don't get cremated, they get buried, because they have already left this world.

3 days in Kathmandu - preplanned - Day 2

by Saagar

Early rise! About 5 - 5:30 go to the domestic airport terminal before breakfast and take Buddha Air's mountain flight and see the Himalayas including Everest at level eyes.By car from the airport, travel to Bhaktapur, perhaps a short stop in Thimi on the way, and find the Pagoda Cafe in Bhaktapur's Nayatapola Square. Have a simple, but slow and lengthy breakfast here - the view is great. Stroll around pleasant Bhaktapur for good parts of the middle of the day. A guide is useful, but not necessary. Map and a guidebook is needed, though. Photo opportunities. You can buy your souvenirs here, too. Go to Nagarkot or Dhulikhel (if clear sky) for a snack or an early dinner and ridge walk with a Himalayan sunset view. You may stay overnight or return to your Kathmandu hotel. If you skip Nagarkot/Dhulikel, return to Kathmandu via Thimi town or Changu Narayan ancient temple site. A late dinner in...

Colourful Holi!

by TracyG

Nepal has so many different festivals celebrating everything and anything, the chances are you will be in Nepal during some sought of festival. I was luck or unlucky enough to be there during Holi, when everyone throws coloured powder and water at each other. I really was in a complete state and it took me ages to get the dye out of my hair! but it was sooo much fun.

Boudhanath Stupa ...

by TracyG

This is the largest Stupa in Nepal and well worth a visit, it is very impressive! This is one of the main centers for Tibetans in Nepal, adn due to that the area is adorned with lots of colourful prayer flags and monks. It really should be on your list of must sees.

The Monkey Temple...

by TracyG

Swayambhunath Temple is one of the most recognisble sights around Kathmandu and is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. The stairs up are quite long and steep (a good way to prepare for your trek) but it is all well worth it. Also watch out for the monkeys (which is how this place got its affectionate name.)

Up close and beautiful.

by planxty

If your budget will stretch to it, taking a mountain flight over the Himalayas is a great experience. We had a trip of just over an hours duration which took us to view the major ranges, and afforded some great views of Everest. We were even allowed on the flight deck for a short period, although I suppose that practice has probably stopped given current aircraft security regulations. The trip departed from and returned to Kathmandu airport.Given that I am unlikely ever to climb Everest, I suppose this is about the closest I'm likely to get!

Monkey Temple - early morning

by NEILHALLIDYA

This is the Buddhist Temple on the hill in Katmandu. There are a lot of other tips on this. I would add that I highly recommend you go early in the morning. This is when there are less tourists. The views of the Himalayaas at dawn, cloud permitting, are outstanding. The ambiance of the place is humbling.
