swayambhunath or the monkey temple..

by eelaine

one of unesco's world heritage site, the swayambunath buddhist temple is a breathtaking stupa sitting on top of the hill.. while it's not too far away from the rush of kathmandu city though there is a sense of peacefulness prevailling over the place.. any time, any day, the temple will be bustling with activities.. pilgrims walking around muttering the mantra om mani padme hum.. visitors turning the copper prayer wheels in clockwise direction.. colourful prayer flags waving high from the top of the stupa.. this is definitely a place that will leave everyone awestrucked..

thunderbolt at the swayambhunath temple

by eelaine

situated at the top of the stairs at the swayambhunath temple, sits a huge varja which represents the thunderbolt, a symbol of the power of buddha.. this is a magnificent piece that is as important as the stupa itself..

Transport in Nepal.

by Alphons

The peoples in Nepal have not all a own car. So the transport they do is by bus. there are no trains. The roads are very bad in the mountains. In the city's are a lot of taxi's and motors. But when the people would like to travel they take the bus. Most inside but very often on the roof of the bus.

See a cremation

by tompt

At the temple of Pashupatinath it is a holy place for cremations. The entire ritual can be seen when you go and sit across the river. There are many rituals during a cremation, but there also is a large difference between the castes. When you are from a lower cast it is all done at a very basic way. The higher castes add things like red dye and flowers. At the end all bodies end up in the Baghmati River. The Baghmati feeds into the Ganges, which spills out into the Indian Ocean. The cremation is a mens job women stay out.

Mountain Flight

by BarbaraForza

This is an experience you must have while in Nepal. If you are lucky enough to have a good weather the scene in front of you will be breathless. While in Kathmandu check for those agencies organizing a one day flight around Himalaya and ask how distant you will be from these mountains before departure!

Making friends with the locals!

by bafgkm

There are always SOME places where people would advise to visit, they always put it this way," you can't miss it!"," You must go there!"," If you don't go there, you couldn't say you were in somewhere!" blah blah..... SO WHAT!? You are doing your travel, right? For me, the scenery is always there and the pictures in the book are better than the ones by my camera, okay, actually ,I'm a little bit lasy, I can simply imagine what I will see in some famous spot and I don't mind if I am there or not. I think, traveling in Nepal, there's one thing that teaches me so much-- making friends with the locals. You can start with children, they are always curious about strangers and they can speak english. A single woman traveller can do it easier.
