pottery square..

by eelaine

the potter's square is an area specially dedicated to the art of making pottery.. all round the square potters' wheel are spinning and balls of clay moulded into pots.. there are rows and rows of pots sitting out in the sun waiting to dry before being sold in the stalls all around bakhtapur.. a word of caution though, most of the pottery worker do not want their photographs taken unless they are paid.. :P

Patan Durbar Square.

by Hmmmm

Patan Durbar Square is a cluster of fine pagoda temples and stone statues. The ancient palace of the Malla kings and the stone baths associated with various legends and episodes of history are especially interesting to visitors. The stone temple of Lord Krishna and the Royal Bath with its intricate stone and bronze carvings are two other masterpiece in the same vicinity. The Bhimsen temple that honors Bhim - great wrestler, brother of the Pandavs, and a deity to Nepalese businessmen - contains fine samples of metal craft. The best place, however, to see metal sculpture is the Hiranya Varna Mahabihar, the "Golden Temple." It is a Newar monastery that contains wall paintings, fourteenth century statues, and scriptures. Its front facade is mostly covered in bronze. Note the stone gates and the figures upon them. Silakars whose descendants are active in the woodcarving industry today built...

PATAN: Also known as, Lalitipur

by Hmmmm

Patan is easy overlooked, since Kathmandu has a Durbar square of its own, and alot of other woonderful sites to see are outside the Capital. Yet the Rickshaw trip south of the River to Patan is a must do.The ancient city of Lalitipur (Patan) is situated on the southern bank of the river Bagmati and is about five km southeast of Kathmandu. The city is full of Buddhist monuments and Hindu temples with fine bronze gateways, guardian deities and wonderful carvings. Noted for its craftsmen and metal workers, it is known as the city of artists. Lalitpur, "the city of beauty," is another name for Patan. The best known complex in Patan is Patan Durbar Squrae.Patan Durbar Square boasts of many famous sites and unique architecture. Krishna Mandir in the Patan Durbar Square was built to honor an incarnation of Vishnu. Krishna fought by the side of the Pandavs in the Mahabharat war to assure that...

Sunrise at Poon Hill

by bijo69

The trek to Poon Hill is relatively easy and takes 4 days return, 5 if you're as lazy as I am. The route takes you through rhododendron forrests and picturesque villages. And the absolutey highlight is the sunrise from Poon Hill which is 3210m. From there you have a spectacular view of the Daulaghiri and the Annapurna Himal.

Pashupatinath

by bijo69

The temple of Pashupatinath dedicated to Hindu god Shiva, is one of the most important ones of the whole Indian subcontinent. The temple is only accessible for Hindus, but there are lots things to see around there. On the banks of Bagmati river you have the ghats, where the corpses of the deceased are burned.

Swayambhunath

by bijo69

The Sacred stupa of Swayambhunath is located on hill which is said to be the cradle of the Kathmandu valley. According to the legend, the valley was a lake in former times when the god Swayambhu appeared on the lake in the form of a lotus. A holy man from Tibet who wanted to get closer to the god split the hills with his magic sword and the water disapeared, leaving the lotus on top of a hill in the now dry valley.

Langtang is great to beat the crowds.

by anthonyrzak

Of three treks, Langtang was my favorite. The teahouses are great and 90% have solar showers for a daily cleanup. The route is not a top tourist destination because the busride up is a rough going and littered with landslides. The locals were great and getting up in the middle of Langtang glaciers.
