Field art

by Saagar

The Nepalis have carried out the world's largest engineering project - the terracing and modelling of nearly all the hills.Som places this has been turned into real art, and while my photo here doesn't do any justice, some of the fields and landscape carvings are real pieces of art, not to be missed. And you find it all over. Stop and wait for the light to be right, then take a photo memory home.

Bonus mountain flight

by Saagar

On the flights to Bhadrapur as well as to Pokhara, the planes will take you along the eastern and western sections of the central Himalayas respectively. They won't go as close as a proper mountain flight, but close enough to bring up your camera and mountain profile map.If you travel to Taplejung, Simikot, Lukla and Tumlingtar you will have the same experience. If there is a haze and cloud cover, only Buddha Air will fly high enough to give you a view (20.000 ft).

Pokhara - Jomsom flight

by Saagar

This is a most interesting scheduled flight. You get a real mountain flight thrown into your transport from A to B. You fly over the trekking areas of Poon Hill, then into the gorge between Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri, and on the left flying in you will see Dhaulagiri. Seing Annapurna is a bit more difficult due to the morning light against this side and the mountian being so close you cannot really get a wider view. Further in you fly into the arid zone, over villages and the Kali Gandaki river. The flight is by small aircraft (up to 18-20 seats' Twin Otters and smaller Dorniers). The fare is 60-65 dollars each way, depending on the airline.

Tea gardens of Eastern Nepal

by Saagar

In Jhapa and Ilam Districts in Eastern Nepal there are extensive tea gardens comparable to those of Darjeeling. You'll pass them as you fly in to Bhadrapur or travel on the Mahendra east-west Highway. The finest views are nevertherless on the wau from the Terai up to Ilam Bazaar, in the tea (brand) area and municiplaity of Kanyam. This is a popular picnic place for locals, too, so trust the scenry is nice and stop here and take in the view. The villages along the road here in the highlands serve "raato chiyaa" (red tea) instead of the traditional milk tea. And it's good! In a hurry? Bring your thermos or screw-on-cap Chinese-style tea cup, fill up at the pasal and take it with you in the bus or jeep for consumption on the way.

Ping, but no pong

by Saagar

Around the autumn festival time (dashain and tihar) , village-owned ferris wheels are set up for the kids to play. The ferris wheel is called "Ping" in Nepali. If you pass by you will certainly be asked to join. Take your chance, and you'll be the hero of the day!The contraption is manually driven by boys or girls who step and pull the spokes at the downward turn, standing on the axel. After the festival season the pings are dismantled and put back into storage in some trustworthy farmer's shed.

Bouddhanath Stupa

by Saagar

This is the most wonderful spot in Kathmandu. When I arrive Nepal, I try to head out here to Boudha, first thing. The ideal arrival time is about 5 pm, soaking up the atmosphere and shed the airtravel stress and nerves. As dusk falls, I head for the Himalayan View Terrace for momos and a beer. My arrival is complete when I head back to the centre of town for my hotel bed.Bouddhanath Stupa is a place you can come to for quiet and contemplation, and you do not need to be particularily religiously inclined to get this feeling of calm and contentment here.Just walk around the stupa and let yourself be mulled by the mood. It is one of the great power places of the world. It is also a good place for shopping Tibetan goods, carpets, clothes etc. Come here for the Tibetan female dress, the chuba, but bring the fabrics from Indrachowk or other places.

Lovely Pokhara!

by butterfly_girl

Do not miss the chance to go to this lovely lakeside village, with colorful boats sailing through the water, smiling villagers and an air of peace and relaxation, compared to the chaos of Kathmandu. If you are lucky, on a clear day, you will see the most spectacular view of the snow covered mountains. This is the starting point to many treks, but if you just want to sit and stare at the lake, you will be perfectly content.
