As long as you're in Kathmandu, take some trips...

by tiganeasca

There are a number of sites nearby that are well worth your time to visit. Some of them, such as Patan, were once rival cities in the Kathmandu valley. Others, like Pashupatinath, are vitally important sites in the city's life. Both (along with others, such as Bhaktapur) are so closely linked to Kathmandu as to effectively be one city. Nevertheless, there are excellent reasons for paying a visit to each of them. (MORE COMING!)

Swayambunath (or, the "Monkey Temple")

by tiganeasca

Swayambunath sits atop a hill covered with two things: inanimate statues and hundreds of highly animated monkeys. You climb a long stone staircase, passing statue after statue of sitting Buddhas, generally about 15-20 feet high, painted in startling yellow, red, and blue. Once past these massive Buddhas, there are still more statues--of elephants, peacocks, horses, garudas (man-birds), and lions, arranged in pairs.Swayambunath is said to be the oldest Tibetan Buddhist shrine in the world. Though the present shrine dates from the late fourteenth century, it has been a religious site for at least a thousand years. It sits, like a crown, atop a hill several miles west of the city proper in Katmandu Valley. In the morning and again in the early evening, Buddhist pilgrims gather to walk clockwise around its base. Hindu pilgrims join them because the grounds of the stupa contain a number of...

A cable car at Manakamana

by beebah

Manakamana is about 30-40 minutes from Gurkha village by bus. Here you can take a cable car up to the temple where all Nepalese wishes to visit at least once in a lifetime.Usually new-wed couples come to pray for a baby boy.And kind of a holiday resort for NepaleseGoats and chicken are sold in shops and apparently they got 'special' cable car just for carrying these animals up to temple for 'sacrifice'Tickets are a few dollars for foreigners (But for Indians it's almost a same price as locals pay) But I paid local price though..Good thing about 'universal asian look'

Sunset at Gurkha

by beebah

On the way from Pokhara to Kathmandu. There's a village 'Gurkha' a home of Gurkha soldiers.Direct bus from Pokhara is available. Here is peaceful and relaxing town. And one of most beautiful places to see sunset i've ever seen. There's also a palace on top of the hill around 30 minutes on foot and it's quite tiring and sometimes it's just closed. If you like a steep road and quiet but lovely town.Gurkha is the right place worth staying for a few days.

Pony ride

by beebah

We trekked to Kagbeni and decided to ride a pony back to Jomsom to begin a 'walk down' trek.(I'm not very healthy actually)And pony ride was something that I would never forget in my life.I don't know if we were lucky or not but ponies we got were not really calm but naughty. One just sat in the cold river just like that..(and ofcourse you were on his back!) ..one didn't want to cross the bridge..Sometimes running fast like crazy..sometimes just stopped and didn't move for minutes..well,you have to try it yourself.Could be a ride from Kagbeni to Muktinath too if you like.

Flight : Fly in to Jomsom

visit the palace where Buddha lived

by beebah

Taking a bus from Lumbini, around 20 minutes you will arrive a village named "Tilaurakot" After get off the bus you have to hire rikshaw to go further (costs 100-200 Rp.) he will bring you true the charming village, quite busy in a way but after you pass the busy area you will see yellow field full of mastard. Then you will reach the area that was once a palace where Buddha lived when he was a prince. And eastern gateway where Buddha left his royal life to seek the truth of world outside palace. They also found some ancient terrakotta, human, animal figures, coins, beads around there. Here you might see some guy walks toward you and begins to introduce this and that, trying to lead you here and there. And ofcourse afterall he asked for money as a 'guide fee' or 'donation' (he didn't help much anyway just to walk in front of us)
