Mass Gymnastics and Cultural Performance Arirang

by nmercury64

The Mass Gymnastics and Cultural Performance Arirang is a spectacular performance put on by 100,000 talented singers, acrobats and gymnasts in midsummer in the 150,000 seat Mayday Stadium in Pyongyang. 30,000 participants holding flashcards make up an everchanging beautiful backdrop. Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace

by nmercury64

Spectacularly large center for schoolchildren's extracuricular activities. Total floor space of 103,000 square meters, with 500 rooms and a 2,000 seat theater. Building contains a library, gymnasium, computers, indoor swimming pool with elevator to diving platforms, science and nature halls, art and music rooms as well as a practice area outside for children learning to drive. Children are encouraged to excel in areas where they have displayed talent and the result for the visitor is incredibly impressive displays of art, musical ability, singing, and dance performances by children. Extremely highly recommended. SEE TRAVELOG FOR ADDITIONAL PICTURES.

An act since 1953 still on the agenda, although it is now pantomime i.e. voiceless (=cross border broadcast have stopped). Two teams of actors. If you expect dramatic you will be disappointed. It is strange to look this place, Panmunjom. It feel like theatre, serious theatre. It is very beautiful and quiet area, but underneath things are supposedly been ready. You will have presentation with a interesting map and there is also some farming going on, because it is encouraged (see CULTURAL TIPS) in both sides.

Again, you have no choice about your activities, but there is some limited flexibility. Everything is pretty much a 'must see'. My top five are (i) the Children's Palace (ii) The International House of Friendship (miles of corridors, thousands of rooms containing gifts to the Great leader and Dear Leader (iii) the demarcation line (iv) the May Day Stadium and (v) ask your guide if you can go the a revolutionary opera is one is on (it is also translated into English). Pick the right time of year and there will be some mass celebrations of something - go to those, they are amazing. This is a country whose populace are totally isolated from the outside world - more so than any other country including Bhutan, Burma or Algeria. You are an object of total curiosity. Every activity is wholly Korean - there is no real concept of tourism and therefore no 'tourist' spectacles. You will be shown...

The acrobatic, circus and magic show

by Stroller

If you have time, you should go to these shows where you can see the other side of the North Koreans. They can smile and laugh. They've got some humours.
