by nepalgoods A big scarf is a must! It can be very usefull. A scarf protects your head against the sun or against rain. A scarf can be used instead of a basket, when you buy fruits on the market. A scarf covers the cushion, so you don't need to sleep on dirty sheets. Folded the scarf can be used as a cushion itself. A scarf can even be used as a rope or a skirt or... A scarf is a very helpful thing. Leave a Comment

INDONESIA by lmkluque The weather is hot and humid. Lightweight clothing will be more comfortable to wear. There seemed to be no strict regulations about how men or women should dress, but due to the strong religious customs, modest attire would be best. Especially when visiting a Mosque or Hindu Temple the arms, (also head for women) and legs should be covered. Leave a Comment

by nepalgoods I took a big backpack and a small daypack for 18 months in Asia with me! It is a strange experience to live just with the things you carry with you. That limits the number of t-shirts and trousers. Carrying everything on your back makes you think about, whether it is really nessessary to carry 10 books or 5 pairs of shoes with you.
In the photo you also see my boots, which brought me around Asia. They were made of leather and a good quality. I don't know, what I would have done, if this shoes would have been lost or broken somewhere in Asia. In Asia they don't sell shoes in my size for women.
I always had a small pack of basic medicine like aspirin, something against diarroeh(did I spell this right??Hmmm) and against cough. But you can easily buy all this in the pharmacies in Asia. Leave a Comment

Do you want your own clothes? 5% of ALL bags get lost or delayed by airlines. Mostly because they do not have a luggage tag! Put the details of your hotel. They can find you!
A good pair of shoes/boots and light coloured clothes, preferably a tan colour. You will get dusty and dark clothes show it more. Unless it’s the rainy season. A good pair of boots would be advisable. Do not take old worn out boots. Not many shoe stores where you may be going.
Sterile wipes for sure and your own soap. Many toilet facilities do not have any sort of soap. Diarrhoea tablets. They can be hard to find and only a few Pharmacies actually sell them. Aspirin. Very expensive in most of the developing world. Bandages for those blisters. Tissue for toilets that do not have any.
A lot of film or a large memory card. You will take a lot of pictures. The whole continent is one big photo opportunity.
Sunscreen. The sun is strong most of the year. You need an electric torch and/or a candle. The power does go out. Water. Water can de disrupted as well so always have some for your accommodation.
US Dollars or a strong currency like Euros or British Pounds. Some local currencies are not convertible. Exchange before you leave for the airport! A good Guide Book and some reading books would be handy. REMEMBER: MALARIA CAUSES DEATH. No one is immune, even locals. You need 100% DEET repellent, Malaria Tablets and coils. Malaria tablets must be started 2-3 weeks BEFORE you leave. Do not gamble with your life. Leave a Comment

Keep it to a minimum as you will have to carry it yourself, service is not common in China. I think backpacks are safer.
Family Travel
Pack some wet towels (the type that you use on babies) because the washing facilities are not always good where ever you go and the toilets can be scary.
I prefer digital photography as processing is not very good where we live.
instant cup of noodle soups are great for train travelling as there is plenty of hot water. Leave a Comment

You should care as little as it's possible, especially when travelling to the south of India, because it's very hot there, and you can buy everything you need, very cheap clothes and other stuff.
Nothing special, simple and casual, tennis shoes, sandals...
toilet paper, bandages, cotton, scissors Leave a Comment

by chetans Don't forget when you buy a kite you also need to buy the string - don't assume it will come with the kite! Leave a Comment

by ozysinchina Pack light, you will most probably have to carry your luggage up stairs, over uneven pavement etc
bring sturdy shoes for walking.
Liquid panadol is not available in China for children. Gastrolyte is essential for tummy bugs.
The lighting in China is hazy often from smog so bring the right film for poor lighting. We found that we could burn cds in some Kodak camera shops from our digital camera.
Sunscreen is essential - Chinese brands often have skin bleaching agents in them.
We allowed our children to bring their backpacks with a small amount of toys. This allowed them to settle in quickly into new surroundings and kept them amused on the long journeys. Leave a Comment

by call_me_rhia ok - ready to go... departing pic. Packing light turned out to be a failure. I finally manage to contact a trekking guide, with a very promising name: Pirate - I know i'm going to have a blast with him. On the downside I had to give up on the idea of a little carry-on luggage: hiking boots weight half a ton (and take up quite some room), sleeping bag is high-tech and all but still takes up room too (well, less than hiking boots)... then hiking trousers, hiking top, water filter, water bottle, mosquito net, small backpack for the hike - and a big backpack became necessary - if i wanted to add in some normal clothes, a swimsuit and a pair of shoes. And to top if all dear Utttz gave me the sad news: if you don't bring a 8 metres long rope, you'll find that hanging a mosquito net will be impossible. Bummer - no rope so to speak in the house - but not a long time ago an angel forgot a climbing rope at my place... so in the backpack it went, without permission of course, but even if he's going to need it i'll be far enough to escape his tantrums. At the end of the day: packing light became a mere fantasy. Moral of the story: you can't go hiking and pack light... sidenoe; alway carry some toilet paper with u unless u prefer the laft hand and water method.. most publc tilets dont provide any Leave a Comment
