Deosai Flowers

The Deosai Plateau has lots of natural wonderful flowers. All of different colours and kinds. You will find them mostly in spring, especially near lakes. They die in the winter and regrow from their seeds in the summers.

Suspension Bridge in Deosai

Crossing Suspension Bridges can be the most exciting part of the journey. There are several of these on the Deosai Plateau and the jeep can make short work of them. Dont miss them.

Deosai Bear in a BBC Report

Deosai is famous for its wildlife, especially its brown bears, which live in their highest concentration in this area. However, you will be extremely lucky if you managed to see them. Deosai Plains make up one of the last frontiers of natural habitat for the Himalayan brown bear, a creature that once roamed the mountains freely. The park currently has inbetween 20-28 Brown bears. This park was establised to protect these endangered bears. Recently a research project has started by Himalayan Wildlife Foundation (HWF) and the Northern Areas Forests, Parks, and Wildlife Department to secure the survival of the brown bear in the Deosai Plains and to monitor their population. The Deosai Plains are also home to the ibex, red fox, golden marmot, wolf, the Ladakh urial, the snow leopard, and a number of resident and migratory birds. Marmots are extremely common with some of them extremely large.

Mammals in the park include--Brown bear, Snow leopard , Himalayan Musk deer Golden marmot , Pika , Migratory hamster and Ermine. Birds in the park are--Golden eagle, Lammagier vulture, Griffon vulture, Laggar falcon, Peregrine falcon, Kestrel, Indian sparrow hawk and Snow cock.

Their preferred habitat includes mountain forests, open meadows and large river. The Brown Bear in Pakistan is now very rare due to constant persecution by local villagers and by hunting. But the main threat to this bears survival is from local gypsies or "Kalandars", who earn their living from dancing bears and bear baiting (read a special report about bear baiting in Pakistan from WSPA). These bears are caught after their mother is shot. It is sad to see more bears on the streets of the big cities of Pakistan than in the wild .

Hotels

Shatung Pani.: Campground.

Shatung Pani.: Campground., Deosai Mountains

TOOCOOL Says:  Did you know "Pani" means water in Urdu? Well, campsites are always near some streams or rivers and this place is no different. This is another of the designated campsites.

Bara Pani.: Campground.

Bara Pani.: Campground., Deosai Mountains

TOOCOOL Says:  Bara Pani is a designated campground in the Deosai Plains about 3 hours drive south of Skardu. There is a small river over which there is a suspension bridge which is flooded and destroyed every year and rebuilt in June/July. It is a good place for camping.

Camping.: Deosai Camping.

Camping.: Deosai Camping., Deosai Mountains

TOOCOOL Says:  Camping is the only form of accommodation at Deosai. Surprised to see no hotels there even though this area is really beautiful, not too far away from Skardu and there is lots of space for building hotel resorts. Anyway, there are several prescribed campgrounds and it is...

Transportation

Jeeps

Deosai can be reached only by Jeep or by feet. Jeeps can easily be hired from Skardu bazaar. They cost you around Rs 4000/- for a one day round trip ( its just for reaching the deosai top and then coming back ). If you want to go deep inside deosai ( deosai is 3000sq km area ), then the charges depend on the particular desitnation you want to see in deosai.

Anyway let me tell you watever you are charged, the place is worth it. You wont regret.

If you get to deosai by foot, there are no jeeps available in deosai. Getting a jeep from Deosai depends on your luck.

So make it sure in Skardu, how you would like to travel to and around deosai.

Beware! Deosai is home to the world's most dangerous, most ruthless, most horrific MOSQUITOES in the world. Yea, this area is famous for them. So take some good spray and try buying Mosquito Repellant liquids like Mospel because these little buggers are as bad as they can get. They can make a white shirt look black!

Deosai Skyline.

Favorite thing: The sky at Deosai is special. If its blue, its a very beautiful mountain blue. If its cloudy, its still very beautiful. It has is own special beauty. However. even though its a lot cloudy at Deosai, I dont think it rains that often there.
