Things to Do

The Hushe Mosque

The Hushe Mosque, Hushe

lachydragon Says:  Check out the Mosque in Hushe village, it is a small but colourful mosque set in amongst the wheat fields with a small cemetary next to it. The mosques of Baltistan tended to follow this colourful style. The track behind the Mosque leads down to the river where you may find...

Dog-roses on the track into Hushe

Dog-roses on the track into Hushe, Hushe

lachydragon Says:  The delicate summer flowers growing on the slopes leading gown to Hushe were a welcome burst of colour after so many days spent amongst they greys of ice and glacial rock. These ones were called 'dog-roses' and really lightened the landscape and spirits of the trekkers!

Wander the laneways of the village

Wander the laneways of the village, Hushe

lachydragon Says:  We spent some time just wandering the laneways of the village and getting a feel for its people and the amazing buildings. Armed with a cheery 'assalam aleikum' the locals were very firendly - with a band of little-people usually inquisitively following a few pacees behind...

The track into Hushe (from the trekking North)

The track into Hushe (from the trekking North), Hushe

lachydragon Says:  The same place as the dog-roses, the trekking route which connects Gondogoro Camp and the Gondogoro La with Hushe village. The scene probably look s unremarkable now, but to hear little birds twittering in the trees stand by a gentle stream surrounded by flowers and stunted...

Take some time out!

Take some time out!, Hushe

lachydragon Says:  More a must-do than a 'must see'. After a couple of weeks of trekking it was so nice just to sit in the sun, take your shoes off and read a book! With views of Masherbrum and stunning green fields, what better place to relax!

Hotels

Camping in Hushe

Camping in Hushe, Hushe

lachydragon Says:  Camping is the only accommodation in Hushe. You probably won't have much choice as you will most likely be travelling with your accommodation boked via a trekking company. I can't remember the name of our accommodation but it was basically a walled garden with a...

Transportation

By Jeep

By Jeep, Hushe

1 Review  Its pretty much Jeeps or walking when you get to Hushe, the Jeeps roads are formidable but the skill of their drivers makes up for it. The road from Hushe to Skardu is sealed for parts and is a better road than the Skardu-Askoli road (see my Skardu travelogues) which has some crazy parts to it!

Shopping

K2 Store.....and others: Trekking Gear

K2 Store.....and others: Trekking Gear, Hushe

lachydragon Says:  The shops along the main street of Hushe. Many trekkers who are returning through Hushe will leave gear at the K2 Store - it you are begining a trek in Hushe and have forgotten some last-minute item, pop in and see if they have it!

Off The Beaten Path

Trek up the Gondogoro Glacier

Trek up the Gondogoro Glacier, Hushe

lachydragon Says:  If would love to come into Hushe and camp there using it as a base-camp for the amazing walks in the area. One that I would highly recommend is to hire a guide and walk from Hushe up the Gondogoro Glacier towards Schiasto and Dlasangpa camping near the shepherds huts and...

Trek to Masherbrum Base Camp

Trek to Masherbrum Base Camp, Hushe

lachydragon Says:  I didn't do it myself - being struck down with an earache and conjunctivitis (at the same time!) but our friend Alan said it was a great walk - make sure you have a local guide and take your camera for shots of this beautiful peak (in my opinion, it was the most picturesque...

Farewell your Porters in Hushe

Farewell your Porters in Hushe, Hushe

lachydragon Says:  Hushe is where you will farewell your porters and organise for any tips to be distributed. Ray and I also gave our porters some Australia patches that they can sew onto their jackets as a gesture that was non-monetary too. After what the porters had done for us on the trek...

Schaischo - the first food

Schaischo - the first food, Hushe

lachydragon Says:   Coming down from the trek, the first inhabited place you come to is Schaischo - basically just a campsite with a caretaker who runs a small shop selling meals and the ever-present coke (which I have to confess I bought - after drinking green tea for 15 days it was pretty...

Central Asia Institute

Central Asia Institute, Hushe

lachydragon Says:   The Central Asia Institute is a US based not-for-profit organisation providing basic sanitation and works projects in Baltistan and other regions of Central Asia. CAI have built a school in Hushe and during the days at the campground we would hear children singing in the...

The Warmest Welcome in Pakistan!

The Warmest Welcome in Pakistan!, Hushe

lachydragon Says:   The people of Hushe are so welcoming - we were invited into one of the villager's house to share green tea with his family. This was quite an honour and we found that people who were living a tough life in the village had not lost touch with their simple, honest...
