Kulcha hose..... by WAHEEDASLAM Forget the stale, tasteless tandoori rotis and naans served in most Pakistani restaurants in Islamabad. Forget also the bloated semolina concoctions served at the Karachi street food-inspired Burn's Road Café, and the stiff miniature parathas served at the laid-back Gup Shup. Islamabad's best kept secret is a small shop in Medina Market where a naan is more than just a naan: it is a sublime and perfect meal in itself. Though the roghni (sesame seed) naans at the shop are regularly bought in the dozens by people from as far as Peshawar and Quetta, the specialty bread prepared in traditional clay ovens at Madina Market is best eaten immediately, still steaming, fresh out of the tandoor. Indeed, to eat anything after a Madina Market naan is a travesty; a culinary faux pas; an inexcusable error. It is a perfect meal. For those with more robust appetites, the Medina Market naan shop also has a series of gourmet naans. These range from the traditional minced keema naan (a buttery naan filled with spiced, ground lamb's meat), to the delicious aloo wallah (potato) and spinach naan. On certain days, if one is lucky, one may be fortunate enough to savour the chicken naan: a warm, soft slightly-stretchy concoction with a divine minced chicken and coriander filling. The shop also sells other bread snacks, such as bakarkhanis and kulchas, but these are merely distractions, cloyingly oily and far from the flaky delicacy of similar Punjabi tea-time delights served in Lahore or Amritsar, and are best avoided.
I just loved the allo walla(patato) naan Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Medina Market, F-8.

A cake in the plate.... by WAHEEDASLAM Opened in winter 1999, the Burns Road Café brings with it a cuisine not previously available in Islamabad (with the exception of some of the Lucknawi creations at Gup Shup). Named after Karachi's famous Burns Road, which is, chock a block with roadside cafes, the focus is on the cuisine of Muslim India. So you'll get Hyderabad's famous baagarey baingan, with a wonderful tamarind sauce; Bhopal's chicken rizaala, where chicken is cooked in coriander; and Delhi's gola kebab's amongst other exotic fare. It's a refreshing change from the generic chicken jalfraizi or mutton masalas which taste the same everywhere. The kebab family at the Burn's Road Café are particularly good - try the gola, dhaaga or bihari kebab's for their tenderness and rich taste.

MIXED MENU..... by WAHEEDASLAM The Hot Spot is delighted to introduce what we believe is food that will send the dedicated carnivore heaven bound…..if only momentarily. A selection of Beef, Mutton and Lamb The only spice used is salt with an emphasis on unlocking the natural flavours of carefully chosen cuts of meat rather than attempting to mask or camouflage the meat behind an array of spices Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Corner of Nazimudin and Parbat Road

World's Best Chicken Tikka and a Great View by topmarmot You can see from the photo what a fantastic situation this restaurant has, with panoramic views over Islamabad. It's basically open air, with a small roofed in area where they cook the chicken on a long pit. The drive up is pretty, although can get a bit tense as the tight curves combine with the local driving style. One time we hiked up from the city, which was a bit much in the heat, but the walk was pleasant enough and the paths good. This is the second restaurant on the Margalla Hills road. The first one is OK, but this one is the prize. If someone can remind me of its real name, I'll be grateful.
Has to be the chicken tikka, which comes in 3 levels of spiciness. The hottest one was a bit much for me, and normally I eat very spicy foods without a problem. Actually, I'm not sure if they serve anything else. The bread is great too. Food Court(Melody Market) Islamabad by WAHEEDASLAM The food is usually very good, the accent being on fresh, clean flavours. The meal begins with a fiery peanut starter - peanuts are marinated in a combination of flaked red chillies and chilli oil - which is extremely delicious. For those who are not chilli addicts, thin slices of pickled cucumbers and carrots are also served complementarily. The Thai soup is an excellent way to start the meal - especially if the staff are reminded not to forget the crispy fried rice that goes at the bottom. If you're feeling somewhat extravagant, the Peking duck is also highly recommended, complete with a fresh plum sauce, steamed pancakes, and sliced celery and cucumbers, to wrap into a delicious concoction. If all goes well, China Town probably offers the best Chinese cooking in Islamabad. mezzo by WAHEEDASLAM A relatively new entrant to the Islamabad food scene, Mezzo has risen quickly to become the best bet for continental food in Islamabad. The restaurant also has interesting if uneven Thai and Pakistani cooking. The Continental dishes are generally well prepared and presented; but the fish dishes are particularly good. The grilled sole in butter sauce is delicious, the salmon is light and flavoursome, and the Thai grilled sole in coriander sauce is also surprisingly good. If you prefer slightly simpler fare try the fried fish with tartar sauce, a favourite with the Islamabad geriatric set. Mezzo also has a pleasant interior innovatively done up in an Egyptian motif. While there is absolutely no connection between the décor and the cuisine it does make for a pleasant environment Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Right next to ABN Amro Bank, F-7, Islamabad.Directions: Behind Laila Market, next to ABN Amro Bank...

omar khayyam resturant by WAHEEDASLAM One of the older restaurants in Islamabad and apart from the host of Chinese restaurants, probably the oldest 'foreign cuisine' restaurant in Islamabad. Omar Khayyam has shown surprising staying power. This is even more commendable if you consider the light and subtle flavours of Iranian cuisine and the fact that most Pakistanis find the food much too bland to consider eating. Nevertheless, this is where Omar Khayyam has scored. The food is authentically Iranian. There is no attempt to 'spice up' the food and cater to local palettes. So you can enjoy the lightness of flavours that are a hallmark of the Iranian cuisine - lots of yoghurt, garlic, lemon, spinach, olives, pomegranate seeds, plain rice and of course saffron. Your taste buds will be thankful for the lack of spice overload. It's a most refreshing change. Started by an Iranian diplomat over a decade ago, Omar Khayyam has maintained a good standard and caters mainly to the diplomatic community who in turn are regular visitors to the restaurant. The décor like the food is authentically Iranian but being in a basement it is a bit dark and dingy. Nevertheless, Omar Khayyam is one of the few genuinely authentic foreign culinary experiences that you can have in Islamabad. outside the royal elephant by mi5chelle The Royal Elephant is an elegant establishment with highly trained servers and an outstanding menu. From the watermelon juice to the curries, its all fantastic.
I ate out with five Italian friends and we sampled a variety of dishes from different curries, to spiced rice, fish and seafood and chicken. I was impressed with everything. I had the traditional thai soup with lemon grass and green curry shimp - delicious. Number 51 on the menu, however, is not recommended. Also, they don't serve alcohol and you cannot bring your own. Local food by WAHEEDASLAM Strictly, this restaurant does not come under 'Islamabad's jurisdiction' being well on the way to Pindi. But while the drive is a good 20 minutes on the crowded Murree Road its well worth it. Set up by a family of British-returned Pakistanis, the Mess combines the staples of Pakistani cooking in London (the paratha rolls and chicken boneless handi remind one instantly of the legendary Lahore Kebab House in the East End) with a rare devotion to fresh, high-quality local ingredients. The food is served quickly and it is immediately apparent that it is fresh. While the menu includes the generic 'chicken burger' and even a few miscellaneous Chinese dishes, it's the Pakistani cooking you should really be going for. The chicken boneless handi has a wonderfully delicate flavour, subtly spiced with ginger, garlic and coriander. The chicken kebabs are also divine; so tender that they almost melt in your mouth; these are the best chicken kebabs available in the twin cities. The saag paneer is a good accompaniment especially as paneer (cheese) is not common in restaurants in Islamabad. Look out also for the extremely tasty stuffed naans as a starter (and even as a main course for naan devotees). Finally, for those missing their student days tracking good Pakistani cooking in England, there is a excellent selection of 'kebab rolls'. To top it off water is served at just the right icy temperature. An excellent deal and well worth the drive.
