Rohtas Gallery, managed by Naeem Pasha, was the first to enter the unexplored art market of Islamabad in 1981. According to him 'It was in response to an attempt to censor a national exhibition when the works of leading painters was taken off before the inauguration because it did not conform to the policy of the Zia(former Pakistan's military ruler) regime." Feeling the need to have a private gallery that would have a greater freedom to exhibit art, three partners Salima Hashmi, Sohail and Naeem set up the showplace. At Rohtas the artists are invited to exhibit, both established painters and new talent get to show their work in the eight to nine shows that are held annually.
The Art Gallery run by painter Mobina Zuberi, holds frequent shows. Nageen Hayat's newly opened cultural center, Nomad Center also devotes space to art exhibitions.
Pakistan has been a seat of the world's leading civilizations from the time immemorial. There is plenty of evidence to support this argument now on display in Islamabad Museum. For example,
20 million years old fossil remains, 2 million years old man-made stone tools, 7000 years old early human settlements which lead to the world famous Indus civilization, Gandhara Grave Culture and Gandhara art, early Islamic settlements, Sultanate and Mughal period, their art and craft.
