The Afghan rowing team

Fondest memory: The 9th SAF Games were probably the first time Afghan sportspersons were competing at an international meet, after many many years...
That generated was some added interest in the media too. While chatting up some of the Rowers, i came upon a pretty interesting story... I asked them where they trained, back in Afghanistan. I know from my two trips, that water is an acute problem there, and could hardly imagine there would be lakes for these guys.
It turned out that almost the entire lot, had got into a boat- for the first time ever-- just about two months ago!! Since there were hardly any lakes to be found back home, this was an unlikely sport to take part in, and the whole team had been practising- for the past few weeks - in a corner of Rawal lake itself!
