Luggage and bags:
Fewer and lighter the luggage the better!
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: ** While it is quite pleasant (bordering on warm) during the day, it gets chilly at night, even in summers. Therefore bring some warm clothing. A light jacket or sweater would do.
** Bring sturdy (but comfortable) walking shoes.
** Bring a pair of slippers / waterproof shoes. Afterall, you are never far from the river in Kalam!
** It is often windy and bright during the day. So if you have sensitive eyes, remember your sunglasses.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: ** Though there are a couple of small medical stores in the main bazaar, it is better to bring your own first aid kit and medicines (prescribed, pain killers, stomach relief, etc).
** Keep in mind that the nearest decent hospital is in Saidu Sharif which is about a 4 hour drive from Kalam.
Photo Equipment: ** Still camera film is available in Kalam main bazaar and there is a photo processing shop as well. However, better bring any special batteries, memory cards, video camera tapes, DVD-Rs, etc with you. Even if they are available, they could cost you more.
Miscellaneous: ** Once outdoors, you will not find a clean toilet, if at all. Keep this in mind, especially if you have young children (2-4 years) traveling with you. For our kids we took along portable toilets that come with disposable sanitary bags.
Although it may be intensely hot in Islamabad, Lahore, or Karachi, it may be quite chilly up in Kalam, especially at night. You will be happy that you brought some warmer clothes.
Bring some lightweight jackets. Good walking shoes are an absolute necessity.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Although you can find a lot of what you will need, Kalam has no "shopping mall" really..it is a bunch of tiny shops, that may not offer the choices a US shopping mall might. So bring along your favourite deodrants, hair gels, perfumes and colognes. It is also advisable to take a couple of stomach ailment related pills, as well as tylenol.
You can buy plenty of bug spray in the market.
Photo Equipment: Film cameras will be fine, but if you need memory cards, or special batterries for your cameras, you should bring them with you.
