  • Enjoy the magnificent rivers

The rivers of Kalam are formed by snow melting on the mountains. This water is magnificent...and the local folk lore claims it to have healing properties (don't know about that really)...You can only truly understand the significance of this tip, if you were boiling in 40C plus heat in the major cities in Pakistan, and then you go for a trip to...

  • Kandol Lake

Kandol Lake is one of the most beautiful lake in SWAT district. One can reach there by hikking a moderate level track starting from "Laddu" in two hours. You can reach "Laddu Valley" by jeep from KALAM in 1.5 hours. You can hire a guide from KALAM to help you in reaching that beautiful lake. You will find nothing to buy after Laddu valley, even in...

  • Kundal Lake

This is a wonderful lake surrounded by mountains. It can only be reached by trekking about 3 hours from Kalam. It is highly advisable to take a guide. You have to follow a branch of the Swat River. The trekking route can be quite scary to the normal tourist with rocks and well you have to almost cling on to the rock wall to hang on. Anyway, the...

  • Miandam

Miandam is a calm and peaceful hill resort in the Swat Valley. The altitude above sea level is about 7000 feet. This place is very beautiful and can be a bit cold. Several mountains springs in the region with lovely trees makes this area almost PERFECT for walks. You can see snow-capped mountains from this place. There are several good hotels in...

  • Lake Mahodand

About 30 km north of Kalam on an unbelievebly bad road lies a beauty, Lake Mahodand. Maho means "fish" in the local language and the lake is trully brimming with fish! The lake is very large and is the headquarters of the Swat River. It is located in a huge green field which is surrounded by very high mountains and has a small forest right in the...

  • Bahrain.

The city of Bahrain is about 40-50 km south of Kalam. This city could become a major tourist stay spot if they ever develop it! The town of Bahrain is situated 66 km from Saidu Sharif and is 10km from Madyan. It is another popular riverside resort, with bazaars worth exploring for their handicrafts. The surrounding area has beautiful valleys and is...

Kalam Restaurants

  • Excellent Pakistani food!

You name a Pakistani dish, and they'll arrange it for you. Just let them know well in advance so they can arrange fresh ingredients. Also tell them just how spicy you want it. You will not be disappointed! However, if it is western food you want, please try elsewhere, though I doubt you'll find it in Kalam. Breakfast:** Paratha (fried wheat...

Kalam Transportation

  • By Car

The route to the Swat Valley is from Islamabad to Nowshera and then taking the turn to Mardan and after crossing Mardan you have to negotiate the Malakand Pass and land safely in Mingora in the Swat Valley. Sounds tough? Well, it really isn't that tough. The journey from Islamabad to Nowshera is pretty uneventful on the 16th century old (but...

  • By Jeeps

Always rent a jeep or another heavy duty car to go to Lake Mahodand or Ushu or Utrot. Never think of driving yourself. An elderly experienced driver is more useful in these areas than a Micheal Schumacher!

  • Driving to Kalam from Islamabad

We (7 adults and 3 children) wanted to travel together so we rented a 12-seater Toyota van. Must say we got a decent deal: PKR 2,500 per day with driver; you pay for fuel. Here are a few tips for would-be travelers:** Select a diesel vehicle. Diesel is cheaper and more readily available in Pakistan than petrol (~ PKR 38 per litre as opposed to PKR...

Kalam Warnings and Dangers

  • by adeel_ahmed Written Jun 30, 2007

** Drive slowly and carefully. There is a lot of loose gravel and mud and the vehicle can slide very easily. This can be very dangerous, as there are no guard rails along the edge of the road.

** The water of Swat river is very cold and very fast flowing. The rocks in the water can be unstable and slippery. Be very careful, especially with children.

Fast flowing waters of Swat river No guard rails, be careful!

  • What to bring to Kalam

Fewer and lighter the luggage the better! ** While it is quite pleasant (bordering on warm) during the day, it gets chilly at night, even in summers. Therefore bring some warm clothing. Although it may be intensely hot in Islamabad, Lahore, or Karachi, it may be quite chilly up in Kalam, especially at night. You will be happy that you brought some warmer clothes. • The road to Mahodand lake

This is a village about halfway, on the route. We couldn't find any jeeps at Ushu, so I took my car. Fortunately for us, it arrived...

Boating is possible at Lake Mahodand (along with fishing). There are mostly motor-boats taking 300 Rs for the whole trip of the Lake. Get something warm to wear. The wind is really blowing in these areas and it is absolutely freezing here. The boat ride takes about 40 minutes.
