Most Viewed Tourist Traps in Peshawar

  • Pearl Continental Hotel

by Papita Written Nov 9, 2008

The Peshawar Pearl Continental hotel is located on Khyber Road next to Peshawar Radio. It is highly secure and has a reputable status in the city as the hotel "the foreigners stay in". Nothing could be farther in the truth. They do appoint you an armed, uniformed soldier to accompany you when you leave the hotel. In my opinion, that would attract a large amount of attention in public. Sure, if you are on a business trip and your employers willing to pay for your stay, go for it. Otherwise it's basically an overpriced, high-profile resort.

Unique Suggestions: If you have the opportunity to stay in the Pearl Continental I would hope someone would make use of all their facilities.

Fun Alternatives: Stay at one of the cheaper, lower-profile hotels such as Gulbagh Hotel, Greens Hotel, Rose Hotel (all in the old city) or the air-conditioned rooftop BBQed Amin Hotel on GT Road. Far more foreigners stay in these smaller hotels without incident. There is a Tourist Hostel that you can find out about through the Visitor Information Center (located in the parking lot of Peshawar Museum). If you feel you must take a security guard with you, you can ask the Visitor Information Center to hire an un-uniformed one (with a handgun instead of machine gun) to take you around.

  • Deans Plaza

by Papita Written Nov 9, 2008

Deans Plaza is a newly constructed shopping mall located where the famous old Deans Hotel was located in the Cantt area. Some locals say it was funded by Chinese businessmen. It is probably the biggest investment that has happened in Peshawar in a long time. Since my most recent trip to Pakistan (Sept, 08) about 50% of the shops were unrented and the mall was empty except for a few curious people wandering.

Unique Suggestions: Take a look in the chain shoe stores that line the edges of Deans Plaza (Bata & Servis). They are pricier than shoes you will find in the old city, but well worth the price if you are looking for a quality, long-lasting made shoe.

Fun Alternatives: Instead of planning to shop in pricy Deans Plaza because its "new, roomy, air-conditioned", suck it up and make it into the old city. It is hot, sticky and crowded but you won't be disappointed with the larger array of merchandise (smuggled too!) offered at a much lower price.

    No tourist trap

by JohnniOmani Written Nov 12, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Peshawar has no real tourist trap in comparison to other countries like Turkey or India. I only saw one traveller in my four days there and I think she was an aid worker so this means you have a less chance of getting ripped off from the locals due to the absence of backpackers. Even if they did rip you off they would only be taking a small amount. If you get the guide that I recommended for your first trip around the area then you will reduce the chances of dishing out an excessive amount of money. Anyway, dont sweat it. Your biggest concern is Peshawar should be security.

Unique Suggestions: If you think you are being ripped off then ask the locals at your hotel about what you should pay for whatever you are interested in the markets. They should help you because I found the hotel owners really protective of me and they were great.

    The Mosque

If you walk from the Mosque towards Chowk Yadgar, on the left side there is an entrance to a Caravan Serai.
Inside the Caravan Serai there is a stair, take the stair to the top floor, and you have a great view over the Mosque.
Don't be afraid that you will miss this place, because when you pass near the entrance gate, there will always be a guy who will show you the upper floor of the caravanserai with the great mosque view.
Of course there is a little but, as a compensation you must visit his little souvenir shop which is located on the ground floor of the Caravanserai, so be gentle and pay him with a visit, show some interest, anyway you are not obliged to buy something.
