Nanga Parbat from the KKH

Nanga Parbat (the "Naked Mountain") is the ninth highest mountain in the world, and the second highest in Pakistan, after K2. It is the highest Himalayan peak in Pakistan, and stands at 8126m (26,660ft) tall. It lies just south of the Indus river, south of the town of Gilgit, and is visible from the Karakorum Highway.

From the KKH at Raikot Bridge you can travel to Fairy Meadows, from where you can get closer to Nanga Parbat.

On the way to Murree which is north of Islamabad the landscape is wonderful. The locals tell me the barreness on the top of the hills is due to the snowline - it snows here during winter. In summer the Islamabadians come to Murree to get respite from the heat. Temps are around 10-15 deg cooler in the mountains - and all less than 2 hours drive from Isb.

Khewra Salt Mine

Khewra Salt Mine is located just outside Khewra which is a small, kind of industrial town in the Punjab.

You can tour one of the mines. It's a walking tour; we did several miles it seemed like. There is a railway which they appear to sometimes use for tours, but it wasn't working when we were there.

Inside the mountain are several huge caverns, and deep pools where the salt is being dissolved. There is a small mosque inside which is constructed with blocks of salt. The blocks are opaque and shades of orange; with lights shining through them it is quite beautiful. You can see this effect in some of the tunnel walls also.

They almost had to dynamite us out of there it was so cool in comparison to the searing heat outside.

Our driver took us there so I can't give much help on finding it (sorry), but it seems like you can just show up. It was all very casual. The guy who showed us around the mine spoke some English.
