  • Pindi Churches

Rawalpindi retains a lot of the architecture from the British Raj, and there are at least two big churches one can visit. (i) There is the Cathedral near the Presentation Convent School in Lalkurti, which has a nice little garden and traditional stained glass windows. There is also a well-kept Christian graveyard a 5-minute drive from there that...

  • Ayub Park

This is a really nice park in the outskirts of Rawalpindi. You can drive to the main entrance from GT Road directly. It has a nice little zoo, a playground and also wild ducks which spend most of their time on the beautiful lake that is inside the park.

  • Desi desserts on Bank Road

This is the real Rasheed Sweets that has been serving Pindi's best kulfi (local ice cream, HAS to be tried!) in Babu Mohalla in the old city for decades. The shop moved out to the more approachable and central Bank Road in the early 90s. Not exactly fine dining, but clean and reasonably priced. Roadside service without getting out of your car, if...

  • Daewoo Bus in Rawalpindi

My family has been using Daewoo exclusively to get around Pakistan. We are very impressed with the quality of service. Buses are clean and depart on an exact schedule. Even in the most backward of villages, I found the stations to be very well maintained and they actually had clean restrooms (a rarity in Pakistan)! The fares are extremely cheap if...

Rawalpindi Warnings and Dangers

From around 1-3 pm. most Pakistanis take a short nap, similar to Spanish siesta. The streets become deserted. This is not a safe time as there have been many incidences of women just walking a few blocks from their homes, and then being attacked. Even if there is no safety risk, one should stay indoors during this time as the summer heat is at its peak!

Rawalpindi Tourist Traps

Taxi drivers have an amazing ability to detect foreigners, even if they are of Pakistani origin. My father was just quoted a price of 400 rs. last week for a short trip. Luckily my uncle was standing at the gate and he realized my father was getting ripped off. He yelled at the driver, so finally he reduced it to the normal fare of 80 rupees.

Unique Suggestions: If you are travelling within Rawalpindi, you should never pay more than 80 rupees. Max fare to Islamabad from Pindi is 180 rupees.

This is my travelling partner Andy. I always snap behind him as a record otherwise I will forget just that. So this one is Andy trying on the knives on display on bicycles by two local Pindis, of course Andy did not buy any, to save trouble when entering train, custom office, etc.
