Clifton Beach, Karachi
Couple of years ago Karachi faced its Exxon Valdez disaster when a Greek oil tanker, Tasmanian Spirit, ran aground and broke into two. The result was a disaster because it spewed all its cargo -oil, onto the beach. For several months, the beach was closed to the public, and even several residents evacuated. A massive cleanup operation was undertaken, and now the beach has reopened to the general public. Do not be scared of grayish/blackish sand - it was like that before the spill.
In addition to the water, various restaurants and vendors catering to all are lined on the waterfront.
If you do not want to go in the water, eat in these restaurants, there is always a monkey show around (see pictures). Also horses and camels are available for one to ride and enjoy the beach.
And if you do not like the crowds, avoid visiting on weekends/local holidays, especially in the evening.
Enjoy an afternoon of horse riding on the sandy beaches. Clifton beach is not the worlds cleanest beach but certainly worth the visit! The fresh cool breeze of the sea air will bring much needed calm and relaxation at the end of a tough day of hustle and bustle, in one of the worlds largest and most populated cities, Karachi.
A half hour of horse riding is around the equivalent of £2-£3 and you are usually given about 2 minutes of safety instructions.
There are several guys carrying boxes with snakes inside them who walk up and down the beach and release the snakes for a "snake show". What that means is that the guy will play some sound on his flute and the snake will dance to it. And of course he expects you to give him a couple of rupees for that (usually between 50 and 100).
You can find similar shows in different places in Pakistan, but here at Clifton it is a very common sight.
The "traditional" beach of Karachi where families and tourists tend to visit very often. There are several restaurants lined up there and a lot of other activities like camel and horse riding on the beach and snake shows to watch.
Karachi beach is one of the largest beaches in the world and is divided in to 7 zones: 1) Clifton 2) Sea View 3) Hawks Bay 4) Paradise point 5) Sands pit 6) French Beach 7) Russian beach near Karachi steel mills
Karachiites love to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a day and smell the fresh sea breeze. Many projects have gone up and many hotels, hostels and motels have gone up all along the beach.
This is the most visited as it is the only beach that is in the immediate city, close that is. All the other ones are farther away. Although it is quite polluted, it is still beautiful, and is a nice place to go, for a peaceful walk on the beach.
Karachi coastline is one of the longest in the World, French beach is one of the finest beaches of Karachi.

Clifton Beach is one of the best beaches I have been to. It is nice long stretch of coastline with calm waters. The sun set is breathtaking.
