The local people of interior Sindh, inhabiting Thatta and its surrounding areas are mostly farmers, fishermen, working for government officials, or sole-proprietors. Wealth is focused on few, while majority are just eking around the activities mentioned above.
The 2 brothers in the pictures came begging, but I gave them chocolate...and they still wanted money. Development has not reached this area, and people are living on meagre resources. Tourist by giving these simple people money have made them beggers, assuming anyone coming in will pay them.
However people are generally of good nature, once you get down to their level, and then they open up. They will go out of their way to help in making your visit wonderful.
The caretaker at Makli at first looked threatening, and a person who wouldn't answer any questions. After our initial introductions, he came out with suggestions to make our trip more pleasureable, and this at places that were not on our list. Route to Thatta is baren with occassional green belts. He has told us of a village not far from Makli where the landscape is totally green, with fields of wheat and rice paddies, and flowing river. Maybe next time we will visit this place.
