 | | | | Highest Mountain Ranges: The green and fertile Turikho Valley, (Tirich Mir) | | | | | |
The green and fertile Turikho Valley, about 100 kilometers long, wends south from the Afghan border to join the valley of the Mastuj River about 65 kilometers northeast of Chitral town. It gives access to magnificent trekking west into the heart of Chitral, close to the highest mountains of the Hindu Kush. East of Turikho, the Khot and Shah Junali passes lead over to the Yarkhun Valley. The lower Turikho Valley is known as Mulkho, the middle section is called Tilnicho, and the upper part is called the Rich Valley. Two roads lead into the valley. The older, slower route leaves the Mastuj road immediately after Charun Bridge, which carries the jeep road from the sduth bank to the. north bank of the Mastuj River just upstream of the junction of the Turikho and Mastuj rivers. This leads to Mulkho, the lower Turikho Valley. The new, faster road to the upper Turikho and Rich valleys leaves the Mastuj road about 12 kilometers further up, just opposite Buni, the capital of central Chitral. Oddly, Buni, the largest town in upper Chitral, is not marked on any map, though it is mentioned in books about the seige of Chitral in 1895. The town is across on the south side of the Mastuj River, but it is accessible by a jeep bridge. It is the government headquarters for upper Chitral and has government rest houses and some local hotels Leave a Comment
