Chitral and Kailash Valley: Must See No. 1 Kailash Valley
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kailashis / the people from Kailash valley are the true descendents of the Alexander - The great, they are still living between two moutains in three small villages. The major village is called Bombharet and it is 1.5 hrs drive from Chitral. These people are not Muslims and they are still preaching the Gods which were preached in Alexanders time when he came here centuries ago. His army men marryed here and stayed here. Since that time Kailashis only married in their own tribe, even when Islam came Muslim didn't marry Kailashis and vice versa. This is how the genes of Kailashi people is still PURE. When you see them u can see the difference between an average Pakistani and them because they look so European, with white skin, bluish greenish eyes and curlish light brown hair like greeks ! Even greek government recognise them as their true descendents and nowdays they are making public facilities for the betterment of these people so that they continue living like in and do not get influenced by modernization.

    shandoor pass.
  • Tip Rating:
  • the drive from Chitral is uncomfortable, but the scerery, once again in Pakistan, is second to none. you can star out the window for hours, and you'll have too, its a long long trip. break up the trip in Mastuj, a very useful tip from Imranthetrekker. thanks brother. the shandoor pas is also the birthplace of Polo. thats right. the same game prince charles thinks he is good at. the mountains are bare of vegetation but the valleys are green and cattle graze aimlessly and seemingly ownerless. the road from Mastuj to Gilgit gave me a feeling of being able to see one the most beautiful places on earth that few westerns could even find on a map.

Pakistan has good museums in Karachi, Bhambor, Hyderabad, Mohenjo Daro, Lahore, Taxila, and Peshawar. Of this list, we liked the one in Peshawar depicting the heritage of that province. Pakistanis love their military. Travelers should visit museums of the Pakistan Airforce, Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Army. The three museums showcase fighter planes, naval ships and submarines and military arms and ammunition used by Pakistan Armed Forces since 1947 (and even before) in a historic perspective. All the three museums display their repertoire in the open area, where visiting families seem to picnic too, and also under covered structures.

Towards the end of our trip we...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Towards the end of our trip we visited Baltistan, situated in the very East of Pakistan. This province is part of Kashmir, now shared between India and Pakistan. It is said that the Baltis have more in common with Tibetians than with Pakistani. The balti language is of tibetian origin and in Baltistan you will find many temples that resemble tibetian culture.

Decorated Trucks and Taxis: So colorful
  • Tip Rating:
  • From the moment you step in Pakistan you will notice the colorful trucks on the major highways that are highly decorated with designs ranging from flowers to birds. They stand out like a sore thumb and they make for some great pics. If you get the chance you should really sit down with some of the local people especially in Pindi and they will not only show you how their craft is done but you will have a chance to sit down with a local and experience daily life in Pakistan. I highly recommend it and it is a great way to spend the afternoon.

    Gilgit, a regional transport hub
  • Tip Rating:
  • no real redeeming features unlike Chitral or Passu, Gitgit is a regional stageing point for further travels. everyone stays at the Medina Hotel...another Imranthetrekker tip.

Shah Faisal Moque, Islamabad.: FAISAL MOSQUE ISLAMABAD
  • Tip Rating:
  • Faisal mosque is located at the end of Shaharah-e-Islamabad,at one end of the city. It is a focal point of Islamabad with a magnificent backdrop provided by the Margalla Hills. This is an amazing building and well worth seeing. It is huge. Unfortunately we could not go inside due to the end of Ramadan nigh and some religious people were doing a fast in the mosque so we were not to go in. Shoes off before entering the site. In 1969, an international competition was held in which architects from 17 countries submitted 43 proposals. Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay's design was chosen. Construction of the mosque began in 1976. King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz (Saudi Arabia) provided the funding, and both the mosque and the road leading to it were named after him after his assassination in 1975. The mosque was completed in 1986.

  • Address: Islamabad, Pakistan
  • Directions: when you leave the airport on the main road to ISB, just keep driving and you will come to the mosque.

    Imranthetrekker
  • Tip Rating:
  • A VT member, and one of the friendliest, helpful and generous people your likely to meet. Imran knows just about everything about the Chitral area, and knows just about everyone in Chitral, stopping every 10 etres to chat to his family and friends. Dont think twice about going trekking with anyone except Imran, its definetly his forte. We treked and treked one day, till I got a big blister. I named my blister "Imran" photo below
