 | | | | Chitral and Kailash Valley: Breath taking Chitral & Civilization in Kalash | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The Chitral Valley at an elevation of 1128 meters (3,700 ft) is popular with mountaineers, anglers, hunters, hikers, naturalists and anthropologists. The 7,788 meters (25,550 ft) Trichmir, the highest peak of the Hindukush mountain, dominates this 322km long exotic valley.Chitral district has Afghanistan on its North, South and West. A narrow strip of Afghan territory, Wakhan, separates it from Tajikistan. The tourist season in Chitral is from June to September. The maximum temperature in June is 35°C (95°F) and the minimum is 20°C (67°F). In September, the maximum is 24°C (75°F) and minimum 8°C (46°F). Kalash Valley.... One of the major attractions of Chitral are the Kalash valleys-the home of the Kafir-Kalash or "Wearers of the Black Robe", a primitive pagan tribe. Their ancestry is enveloped in mystery and is the subject of controversy. A legend says that five soldiers of the legions of Alexander of Macedon settled in Chitral and are the progenitors of the Kafir-Kalash.The 3,000 strong Kafir-Kalash live in the valley of Birir, Bumburet and Rambur in the South. Bamburet, the largest and the most picturesque valley of the Kafir-Kalash, is 40km from Chitral and is connected by a jeepable road. Birir, 34km away is accessible by a jeepable road. Rambur is 32km from Chitral, the road is jeepable upto Ayun and the remaining 16km have to be travelled on foot. The Kalash women wear black gowns of coarse cloth in summer and hand-spun wool dyed in black in winter. Their pictureque headgear is made of woollen black material decked out with cowrie shells, buttons and crowned with a large coloured feather. In parts of Greece even today some women sport a similar headcovering. The Kalash people love music and dancing particularly on occasions of their religious festivals like Joshi Chilimjusht (14th & 15th May - spring), Phool (20th - 25th September) and Chowas (18th to 21st December). | | | | Decorated Trucks and Taxis: Artistic Beauty on the move...Decorated Truks | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Truks & Buses are the most important means of transport in the country. Every owner of a bus or truck who takes a pride in himself takes care that his vehicle is highly decorated. Busses and trucks in Pakistan are loaded beyond the limit not only with goods but also with images, ornaments and symbols. Hammered trims from shining metal, shimmering rosettes, reflectors of all colours, wood carvings, colourful chains & calligraphies beautify the trucks. The sides & the back exhibit the art of truck painters. The wooden sides are divided by struts into small segments which are often completely filled with different motifs. Flowers, animals, landscapes & portraits of women are represented most frequently, twined around with painted garlands & ornaments. Mythical images like Buraq, the winged horse of Prophet Mohammad’s the celestial journey, portraits of popular Pakistani personalities or pictures of famous buildings can be found there. These images are moving testimonies of Pakistani culture & society. They express the values, dreams & desires of the people (and especially the men). Pairs of small birds, peacocks, beasts of prey and flowers are also motifs of the country’s pictorial poetry. Often one can see hill landscapes with wooded slopes and lakes that remind of Kashmir, Pakistan’s unfulfilled political dream. There is no truck without the Muslim creed, one of the names of God or the name of the Prophet. Religious motifs are part and parcel of truck art. The high construction above the driver’s cab is almost always decorated with pictures of the pilgrim places at Mecca. The big Faisal-Mosque of Islamabad is another popular image. Calligraphies mention names of popular saints or pilgrim places. Painted eyes avert the evil eye. Many of the images are taken from more profane realms. The idols of the nation play an important role. Imran Khan who was a cricket star in the first half of the nineties was frequently immortalized on trucks, just as movie heroes like Rambo or Tarzan. | | | | K2 - Mountain: K-2..... World's Second Highest Mountain | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The K2 region of Pakistan is one of the most remote and mountainous places in the world. It is a vast desert of huge rock walls, glaciers and the some of the highest mountains in the world. At 8611m, K2 is the second highest point on earth, and the world's largest pyramid. It is the only mountain over 8,0000m high to retain it's original surveyor's symbol and was first climbed by an Italian expedition in 1954.The peak has now been climbed from almost all ridges. Demand to climb it from different, newly identified and difficult routes is on the increase. This is because the peak has yet to be climbed for as many times as its elder sister, the Everest. The local name of K2 is Chogori, which in Balti language means, The King of Mountains. This name is little known to the outside world. It is therefore desirable, that, the present name - K2 is used: It is, however, beneficient to popularize the local name which so succinctly conveys the hugeness of this gigantic mountain. K2 has variously been described as the "awesome", "killer" and "savage" mountain. This is because of the massiveness of its size and some unsuccessful attempts, made upon it, by various expedition parties, including Americans who apperently have made quite a few attempts on it.
