    Tarbela Dam....(Haripur range)
  • Tip Rating:
  • To the west of Haripur is one of the Pakistan's geo-technical wonders, The world's biggest earthen dam,"Tarbela", spanning the Indus where it empties onto the plains it was meant to ease Pakistan's fragile dependence on irrigation water from rivers like Chinab and Sutluj that rise in India. It was started in 1968 and not yet finished. It is immense -150 m high and 2.5 km across and most dramatic when in summer its 95 sq. miles long resevoir is full & the monster spillways are thundering.

On independence Pakistan inherited seven museums, out of which Museums at Lahore and Peshawar were run by the Provincial Governments while site museum of at Harappa, Moenjodaro, Taxila and the Armoury Museum in Lahore Fort were looked after by Central Government through its Department of Archaeology. Immediately after independence plans were taken in hand to establish National Museum of Pakistan. It was on 17th April 1950 that the National Museum of Pakistan was inaugurated in Freer Hall building, replacing the defunct Victoria Museum. In order to advise the National Museum of Pakistan to enrich its collection through new acquisition, an Advisory Council for the purchase of antiquities and works of Arts was also formed by the government in 1950. The development of museums in the country has been spectacular and the last decades have seen quite a few museums being established and many others reorganized on modern lines. Recently a museum exclusively devoted to Allama Iqbal at Javed Manzil, Lahore and another House Museum in the Quaid-I-Azam House (Flag Staff House) Karachi have been established. The detail of the existing museums under the charge of the Department of Archaeology & Museums as well as some of the private museums is given below:

Kaghan Valley: KAGHAN VALLEY,,, The 161 kms...
  • Tip Rating:
  • KAGHAN VALLEY,,, The 161 kms long landscape of the Kaghan Valley with its towering Himalayan peaks, peaceful lakes, majestic glaciers and splashing waterfalls is a scenic wonderland, ending northwards in the 4148 metres (13,600 ft) high Babusar Pass, jeep service is available in the valley during summer, while motels and rest-houses offer comfortable accommodation. There is a PTDC stopover Motel in Bellyached and a big tourist resort in Naran which provides excellent accommodation with meals at reasonable rates. It is an ideal area for trekking and trout fishing. The adventure begins in Bellyached, a charming mountain village, from where a road climbs 34 kms up to Shogran. At a height of 2,362 metres, Shogran has thickly forested slopes and grassy meadows, which present an ideal setting for your first stopover. The raging Kunhar river accompanies the steep winding road which leads to the Kaghan village. This little village, after which the valley has been named, is only 61 kms from Bellyached. Between Kaghan and Naran there is a distance of 25 kms. Naran serves as the base-camp for excursions to other valleys, lakes and peaks. l LAKE SAIF-UL-MULUK,,, 10 kms from Naran, this lake is 3200 metres high, providing an awe-inspiring view of Malika Parbat (Queen of the Mountains) 5,260 metres high. You can go boating on the lake and hear the local legend about Prince Saif-ul-Muluk who fell in love with fairy. Babusar Pass 4146 metres high, this is the gateway to the Gilgit valley. On a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of the towering Nanga Parbat, 8126 metres high. This is the highest point, and marks the end of the Kaghan expedition. On the way to the Pass there are many quaint villages, such as Battakundi, Burawai, Besal and Gittidas, where you can rest. If you have the time, the enchanting Lalazar plateau near Batakundi and Lulusar lake near the Babusar Pass are worth visiting. Fishing The Kunhar River and the various lakes offer plenty of fishing opportunities. Both the brown and rainbow trout and the mahasheer are found in abundance. A fishing permit may be obtained from either the Fisheries Department at Naran, or the Trout Hatchery at Shinu. Fishing rods are available at Naran on hire. Guides are also available at Naran.

Pakistan has some absolutely stunning trekking! The number and variety of trekking trips is almost boundless, all the high-altitude trekking is in the Northern Areas and North-West Frontier Province (basically the areas North of Islamabad) with the glacier treks up to K2 Base Camp, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum and Masherbrum being in the Baltistan region - accessible by a flight or bus trip to Skardu and then Jeeps to the head of the trek. There are plenty of Pakistani companies offering treks - try searching online for K2 Pakistan Trekking type things and you should get quite a few hits. I found about 21 local companies to choose from and then ruled out dodgy sounding ones and finally found one to suit my interests, budget and departure date. I went with Adventure Tavel - http://www.adventure-touroperator.com/ (Give me an email if you want more details)

    Lahore: Lahore
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lahore is dusty, dirty and chaotic. Nevertheless, this huge city offers so many first-class attractions that it keeps you busy for at least a couple of days. Great architecture from the Moghul- and Raj-era (mosques, the Fort, the Mall) ; Shalimar Gardens; the huge tomb of Jehangir and, of course, Old Lahore with its maze of narrow alleys, bazaars, old buildings and open sewers. However, there's a different side to Lahore, just a couple of kilometers from the hustle and bustle of the Old City, there are tidy and green suburbs and chic cafes.
