Very laid back town, safe and friendly.
If you would want to go here...for the MASSKARA....try to coordinate your accommodation, tickets, etc., early........
Must witness it's annual Maskara Festival during October.
Lacson Street has it all! There are many places where to eat and hang out along Lacson Street. Japanese, Italian, Filipino, etc. restaurants are everywhere! Also, coffee shops are commonly seen around this area. One of the places we’ve been to is Sorrento. Sorrento is a building where numerous bars can be found and also if you feel like shopping,...more
Readers of my pages, particularly my Asian pages, are probably heartily sick of me writing tips about markets, markets and more markets. Well, here is another one and I make no apology for it. I rarely buy anything, not usually having the wherewithal to cook but I adore wandering round them especially late at night or early in the mornng, dependant...more
I visited this market literally within about 30 minutes of steppng off the ferry in Bacolod, accomanpied by my VT friends Buena ad Gregg. The reason for this was that we were buying produce that was to be prepared for us in a nearby restaurant (see seperate tip)It is well-documented on VT my love of both fish and markets, especially Asian markets,...more
Whilst I love Bacolod, there are not a huge amount of what you might describe as tourist attractions. One such is the Negros Occidental Museum whch turned out to be an unusual little place. Having paid my 50 peso admission, I found myself in what appeared to have been a large old colonial house.A large portion of the ground floor appears to be...more
The Negros Forest and Ecological Centre right in the middle of Bacolod saddens and encourages me in about equal measure. It is an institution devoted to attempting to save endangered species from the Visayas region, specifically Negros.I am not a huge fan of zoos generally as I think that animals should not be caged in but I can see the reasoning...more

We were told to try their Batchoy and it never failed us. We were suppose to try this at their main branch along Lacson Drive but upon arriving during dinner time, they were not serving it anymore. We had to transfer to their other branch located at the Go Hotels of the Cebu Pacific group. We ordered the super special Batchoy which includes the...more
I must say that this is the best restaurant in Bacolod. A must try would be the Squid fats which is cooked as black adobo, the steamed oyster mushrooms is also a must try. The inasal Scallops are also great for appetizer. The restaurant is a bit far, roughly 20-30 minute drive from the town proper but again, everything's worth it! SCALLOP INASAL |...more
We had our first lunch in Aboy's. I can definitely say that this restaurant gave me an awesome impression on my first visit! The restaurant is like a big house! I love the hanging colorful masks, I really find it very attractive! The ambience, food and the service were great! The place was very wide and you can choose where you wish to dine whether...more
Pendy's restaurant is the most elegant resto I've ever seen in a province like in Bacolod. When we entered the place, it was like.. the time turned back in the Spanish times, I felt I was in one of the restaurants in Intramuros, Manila. I don't know anything about Pendy's but it's quite popular here then I got to know it better when I saw this...more
If there’s one thing that you mustn’t miss while in Bacolod, that is to eat in Bacolod Chicken House! They say that this is the only proof that you’ve been in Bacolod! This is the home of the famous and original chicken inasal. There are 2 branches of Bacolod Chicken House, one in Araneta Avenue and the other in Lacson Street. We got there through a...more
We had our dinner in Palmas del Mar Resort which is actually a 5-acre resort situated at the edge of the sea. What’s great about this is that though you don't stay in their resort, anybody can eat at their restaurant while watching the sunset. This resort is a bit far from the Business Inn Hotel where we stay, about 20 minutes to get there. At the...more
After shopping and after trying all the sunglasses in the TOP SHOP, we decided to chill for a moment and savor our last night in Bacolod. We headed to the gypsy bar, just beside the TOP SHOP. The bar is very cozy, I just feel like being at home due to the red sofa near the door and somewhat like a beanbag which you can use to sit on the floor. I...more

If you don't have a relative in Bacolod and want to do a DIY tour it is a good idea to rent a car and self-drive around Bacolod and the nearby city of Silay and the other towns in the province. This will give you the freedom to explore the historical sights and tourist places that makes the province of Negros occidental a must see...more
In Visayas Region, public transportations like jeepneys are called “Passad” .The only difference between the 2 is the design of the vehicle. Passad looks longer and rectangular while jeepney has curves.. well, that’s how I see it. We took Passad when we went to Lacson Street, then when have to tell the driver “Para” which meant that we have reached...more

Quite often, after the big Masskara festival parade and the competition, to earn a bit of cash, some young people go around and try to sell the masks or headdresses they used for the festival. They commonly approach tourists (foreign and visitors from Manila) and try to convince them to buy the things. It's very difficult to turn down an offer, as these headdresses are usually very elaborate, very creatively done -- impressive really and quite cheap (we were asked the equivalent of around 20 USD by one man). What usually prevents the would-be buyer is the inconvenience of transporting them without ruining anything.
I don't think there is anything wrong in this, and that it is a tourist trap. Most of these parade participants come from the poorer districts, students, and young people. I'm not so sure though if the organizations (they parade as an organization or group) they belong in allow this, as they may have an obligation to return the masks after.
Hena is great....to look at...especially mine......i liked it...but a week after it was tattooed in my arms.....I got allergies......There were rushes all over my hands (on the area where the hena tattoo was placed....)I suggest...to everyone who would want to have a hena tattoo for the first time...to think about it.....more
