Ideally, get a friend to meet. If no one, then you MUST agree the fare before leaving and as the other writer stated, MAKE sure the meter is running and keep an eye on it because they do try to switch it off whilst you are not watching. If the agreed fare doubles, then give him just the agreed amount and walk off but stick to what you know was agreed and if the worst happens, DEMAND to see a police officer. They will soon accept your fare

Airport Security, NON existent!??

On departure, we went through security at the airport and didn't feel very safe at all. The metal detector we all had to pass through was not plugged in. Why, it was broken.
Yes, there were armed security guards but, NO screening for a potential hijacker with a gun. And this area is a strong Muslim stronghold where people have been kidnapped and held for ransom or worse.

Drinking Water

I guess the Drinking Water served at most restaurants and establishments are potable (clean) but it has a distinct taste (may lasa) thats different from what I am used to. If you're a bit picky, you can buy Absolute or Summit Purified Drinking water at local supermarkets (about P60 per 5-gallon container)

Swarming Jeepney Barkers

Jeepney barkers, especially those at the Agora Terminal, are quite annoying. It's important to know how much the fare is (Agora-Divisoria is only PHP 6) because barkers will try to convince you to take the jeepney they have contracted for a higher price (PHP 20 per head). They can really, really be annoying and won't stop pestering you. What we did was walked away from them... and waited for a PUV at a spot far from the barkers.

Taxi Drivers at the airport

When you get on a taxi, always make sure that the driver turns on the meter, especially if you just got off the airport. The driver will tell you there's a P200 flat rate; don't give in - insist that he should use the meter. Otherwise, get off the vehicle; there are other taxi drivers outside waiting for your business. Airport to city center costs only around P100 to P120. It is suggested that you show the driver that you are writing down information on a notebook, such as the taxi name, plate number, date and time of transaction, etc. Unlike in Davao City airport where a city employee hands out feedback forms *before* you get onto a taxi, the local government of Cagayan de Oro apparently has no means yet to curtail unfair business practices of taxi drivers against tourists and business travelers.
