Barcino's: Spanish Tapas and Drinking Spot

by machomikemd Written Nov 5, 2013

Barcino's is not the oldest Spanish Restaurant cum wine bar in the Philippines, but it surely popularized Spanish Tapas to filipinos and also became part of the growing wine appreciation of filipinos, who are more addicted into beers and liqours. Tapas before is only known as a filipino fried beef dish and now, filipinos know that spanish tapas are small servings of hearty meals, much like the amouse bouche or appetizer platters. Barcino's Tapas and wine bar is now more popular as a drinking joint than as an eating joint, hence my separate nighlife tips on it. they have 3 branches in Makati City, this branch at Greenbelt 2, at Greenbelt 5 and at Powerplant Mall.

besides the traditional spanish ans other wines from around the world, which they offer by the glass or by the bottle, ranging from 300 to 500 pesos a glass to the Estrella Galicia Spanish Beers that cost 120 to 140 pesos (depending on the type, whether lager or dark ale or light) and their assorted cocktail drinks and their really strong Sangria Drinks (280 pesos a large glass and 800 pesos for a pitcher) and the favorite bar chow cum tapas of gambas (450 pesos), croquetas (350 pesos), calamares (380 pesos) and more, this is among the more famous nitespots in greenbelt 2 drinking area.

by machomikemd Written Nov 5, 2013
    4 more images

this is their branch at the third level of Powerplant Mall, located at the former Kabisera By Dencio's Spot.

The Draft Gastropub is now like mushrooms sprouting all over, as it now has more branches as before as filipinos are now getting used to drink more varieties of International Beers (mostly European brands and some asian beer brands too) and learning to drink beer without ice cubes as not to dilute the flavor. They now have 2 branches in makati city alone and more around the metro.

Draft Gastropub is a European Style Pub with a lively crowd and lots of european expatriates among the patrons hence the place is really authentic plus they have an international selection of beers like stella artois, chimay, Tuborg, Beck's, hoogarden, tiger beer, Heineken, Sam Adams and more. Both the bottled and draft versions of beers but the price is NOT that expensive for Philippine Standards, comparable to the beer price in 5 star hotels. Average price of local beers like san miguel lite and pale pilsen at 100 pesos an order and for 1 glass of stella artois draft or beck's beer is 250 pesos an order. Other beers like tuborg at 140 pesos a bottle, Chimay at 220 pesos a bottle. This is esily one of the more popular nite spots in the greenbelt 2 area as it it packed with people even on weekdays. they also have vodka cocktail specials at buy one take one at 200 pesos and assorted cocktails like zombie or mai tai or tequila sunrise at 180 to 220 pesos an order.

Bar chows are aplenty too and are mostly european stuff like assorted sausages and saurkraut at 400 pesos an order or German Pig Knuckles at 650 pesos an order.

opens: 10:00 am to 2:00 am everyday except sunday, closes at 12:00 am

Dress Code: they have a separate smoking area outside and there is no smoking area inside the air conditioned area.

Cafe' Cubana Bar and Cafe: Place to Drink at Meet Girls in Burgos Street

Cafe Cubana Bar and Cafe is one of the many restaurants and bars in the popular royal bellagio hotel that sits in the middle of sleazy burgos street in Makati. the Cafe Cubana is open 24/7 but the crowds go there during the evening hours as this area is a favorite meeting place to pick up local girls by horny foreign male tourists to have a drink and have some "extra service" This place is a micro mini version of the sports bars of bangla road in phuket but they don't have go go dancing girls here since this is an open faced bar (they are more conservative than in sinful bangla road).

If you plan just to have some drinks and some bat chow, the place also have excellent choices of cuban chow like arroz cubana, tamales, cocido and more and they have an extensive list of cocktails like mojito or cuba libre at 150 pesos a pop and some local beers like san miguel at 120 pesos a pop and foreign beers like heineken or tiger beer at 180 to 200 pesos pop.

Burgos Street: The Red Light District of Makati

by machomikemd Written Feb 6, 2013

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    4 more images

The former red light district of the capital was in Ermita District in Manila but the place was gentrified during the 1990's and since then, the disco bars and go go bars started congregating at the Burgos Street and it's environs in Makati City where there are many mostly male foreigners staying and doing the usual favorites. Burgos Street is a lowly cousin to the lively Pub Street in Siem Reap and Patpong Area of Bangkok and the Party Capital of Asia, Bangla Road in Phuket (see my tips there). Burgos Street has an assortment of go go bars, sports bars, restaurants, apartelle, guest houses and hotels and most of the establishments here open for almost 24 hours.

if you want to experience the nightlife similar to bangla road or pub street of phuket or siem reap in makati, this is the place to be (but with less foreign tourists and crowds).

    the bar area

TGI Fridays has separate areas for dining and some drinking action (they also have a separate enclosed smoking area). this tip will be at the Bar area of the restaurant. The Bar area is located in the huge complex and is near the entrance, the ambiance here is more mature but you have the same menu and drink lists as in the main dining area but they have a big bar where there are lcd screens playing various sports channels.

They have an extensive collection of Cocktails and beers and the selections are similar in the US Mainland but the prices are slighly cheaper here. A Big Glass of my favorite Ultimate Long Island Iced Tea Cocktail will cost 295 pesos, regular glass will be 180 pesos. Other cocktails like pina colada at 190 pesos for a regular glass and 300 pesos for an ulitmate glass. Local Beers costs 100 pesos an order and foreign beers at 180 pesos and up.

Opens: 10:00 am to 1:00 am on weekends
10:00 am to 11:00 pm on weekdays

TGIFridays is popular American restaurant chain focusing on casual dining, usually of the typical american huge servings, with over 500 restaurants across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and the UK, as well as many other countries around the world including here in the philippines. The name is taken from the expression "TGIF", or "Thank God It's Friday." The restaurant chain is known for its appearance, with red-striped canopies, brass railings, Tiffany lamps, and frequent use of antiques as decor. It has a large menu with an emphasis on alcoholic beverages. A section of their menu is dedicated to the "Jack Daniel's Grill", a selection of items flavored with a special Jack Daniel's sauce.

The Lobby Lounge of the Makati Shangrila Hotel easily is one of the best and largest lobby lounges in the Philippines. It competes with the nearby Lobby Lounge of the Manila Peninsula Hotel in sheer grandness and with statospheric prices to boot! It is one of the famous nite spots in Makati for upscale people and of the older set who enjoy jazz music more than the current RNB, Pop, House, Trance Music. The live 14 man orchestra is free with no cover charge and they play a variety of Jazz and sentimental music. The view is very lush, with the landscaped gardens of the hotel and a waterfall and with views of the Makati Skyline.

This is a sports bar that mainly shows football, rugby and cricket matches. There's a lot of TV screens around the bar. Most of the patrons are expats from Britain and Australia simply because of the sports being shown on the screens.

Havana Club: Open air cuban Beer Garden

by Ramonq Updated May 18, 2011

This is located within the Greenbelt complex right in the heart of the commercial district of Makati. It's a branch of the original havan Club in Malate, Manila, but this one is more upmarket with a great view of the pedestrian traffic therefore excellent for people watching. Daytime is quiet watering hole, but gets really lively past 8pm, where expats and locals congregate and listen to lively Cuban music.

Dress Code: Smart Casual in the evening.

    P Burgos Street

by Ramonq Updated May 13, 2011

Makati has a redlight district along P. Burgos Avenue where P stands for Padre, named after a heroic priest who fought for the Philippine independence from the Spanish colonialists. KTV's abound with "guest relations officers" who massage the egos of mainly Korean and Japanese men by listening to their mournful renditions of their songs in their own language. There are also expat British or Irish bars, shisha bars, and as commonly spotted in these type of districts, restaurants and strip joints galore.

It's no doubt very popular with the tourists and male expats with things happening late at night every night.

Museum Cafe: The Art of Clubbing

by KookieDough Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It is what it is - a cafe in a museum. Of course, as you would expect, the establishment has that exquisite modern design that complements the museum itself.

While Museum Cafe is already open before 7am daily, the best time to come over is still at night, after dinner. They got great drinks and appetizers - they really go well with lounging around with friends or a date. Try Rockstar, one of their original cocktails, and the seared tuna.

Dancing could probably be well in your agenda, too, as they have good club music.

Maybe you can even mingle and meet new friends. Tourists won't feel out of place here. The place has generally a cosmopolitan crowd.
