Ayala Center, Makati: Prime shopping experience

    Amidst the greens, entrance to
    G3

Located at the heart of Metro Manila's premier business district, Makati, is Ayala Center, a mecca of pure shopping, dining and entertainment experience. Ayala Center is a sprawling shopping area consisting of two major developments - Glorietta and Greenbelt. Glorietta itself has four wings - G1, G2, G3, and G4 (G is for Glorietta) and is appropriately shaped like an octopus (well, quadropus in this case). This is where the not-so-expensive shops are located.

On the other hand, Greenbelt is a more recent development (except for GB1), where the high-end stores (particulary in GB4) and the exciting restarants are.

My top 5 favorite stores in Ayala Center:
    1) Hobbes in GB3 - for the youngsters and "young once," a treasure trove of toys and knick knacks.
    2) Powerbooks in GB4 - simply love their selection
    3) Tower Records in G3 - for music lovers
    4) Mercury Drug in G3 - conveniently located for those last minute purchases of medicines, tolietries and even groceries
    5) Rustans Dept Store - for "pricey" shopping experience

    My top 5 favorite restaurants:
    1) Max Brenner - move over, Bizu; the bald man's chocolate creations are exquisite and divine.
    2) Sugi - for Japanese
    3) Sentro - Filipino favorites with a twist
    4) Good Earth - Chinese staples with a twist
    5) Luk Yuen - affordable, quality Chinese food

In this shoppers' mecca, almost anything and everything!

Top 5 things to do besides shopping and dining:
    1) Catch the latest art flicks (vs commercial films) in Ayala Center's comfortably furnished cinemas.
    2) Get a special spa treatment.
    3) Learn more about Philippines history and culture in the adjacent Ayala Museum.
    4) Get a strategic seat in the many cafés and people watch.
    5) Recharge those batteries amidst Greenbelt's wonderful gardens - for free!

From P1 to infinity! Cash or plastic, no problem!

SM Megamall: The largest mall in the Philippines

    Megamall in the morning

SM Megamall, strategically located in the (geographical) center of Metro Manila in Ortigas Center, is the largest mall in the Philippines. It offers everything, the consummate shopper desires - from medical clinics, to a chapel.

The stores are housed under two buildings - buildings A and B. As a reference point, the one closer to ADB (Asian Development Bankl) is Building A.

    My top 5 favorite stores:
    1) Powerbooks
    2) SM Department Store - arguably the best-stocked among the many branches scattered nationwide.
    3) Ace Hardware
    4) The new computer stores at the 5th level
    5) Home

    My top 5 favorite restaurants:
    1) Sushiya
    2) Pancake House
    3) Luk Yuen - saw Tatang (Mr. Sy, the major shareholder of SM malls) eating there once - tells you how good the food there is.
    4) Cibo
    5) Foodcourt at the basement for variety.

In the Philippines, malling (yes, we Filipinos are masters of this activity) does not mean buying stuff only. While you can buy almost anything in this giant of a mall, there are other more fun ways of malling. Here are 5 suggestions on what to do at SM Megamall besides shopping and dining:

    1) Count the number of steps it takes to traverse the entire distance from Building A to B.
    2) Watch free mini-concerts.
    3) Browse at Powerbooks.
    4) People watch.
    5) Ask directions from the security personnel and get blank faces as answers.

    From zilch to millions!

Quiapo Market: Quiapo Market A Flea Market of Hard to find Goods!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located alongside the Quiapo Church, Quiapo Market Manila is another good and cheap place to enjoy shopping in Manila. Quiapo, district of old Manila, is well known for its markets and stalls that are good place to pick up traditional Filipino handicrafts. Besides, this place also offers cheap prices on items including electronics to clothing. Quiapo Market Manila is the best place for shoppers seeking Philippine handicrafts, such as carvings, lamps made of shells, and canework.
If you are looking for some locally made high quality home decors, this market has good bargains and displays. The area is filled with all sorts of crowd. Not only this one can also buy all kinds of pirated products here, as it is the largest area of selling pirated movies and software.

Manila Quiapo Market consists of two distinct markets; one is the famous outdoor market named Ilalim ng Tulay meaning " under the bridge" and other one is Quinta Market. In Ilalim ng Tulay market offers all kinds of shopping items while Quinta market offers garden-fresh fruits and newly picked vegetables. One can also shop for fine-looking secondhand clothes from chain of stalls that lined this market. For handicrafts and wooden furniture, there are nice items that can be easily spotted at Ilalim ng Tulay market.

Quiapo is also famous for the Black Nazarene. Thousands of people parade through the streets to touch the statue where it is supposed to produce miraculous effects. A number of faithful usually collapse in a faint during the ritual, and some have even died. The Feast Day of the Black Nazarene (also known as Quiapo Day) is celebrated every January 9th. Plaza Miranda is the heart of Quiapo District. It is a square or a public plaza in front of the St. John the Baptist Church or Quiapo Church as it is widely known. It is also a popular site of political rallies.

The Quiapo district is also home to a sizable Muslim population in Manila, and The Golden Mosque is located there.

The largest area where you can buy pirated DVD movies, software and pornographic videos can be found in Quiapo where the stores sprawl over four public streets. immediately abutting the Quiapo church, there is the commerce for the devotees and the dabblers in the alternative. Rows of palm readers and fortune tellers. Flower vendors hawking stringed sampaguitas foraltar offerings. Make-do stalls with their dizzying array of wares for the faithful. Candles in a variety of colors for specific spells and counterspells. Incense, alum, lotion and snake oils. Colorful Icons of the Sto. Niño and the Virgin Mary in laminates, wood or plaster. Amulets, pendants and talismans. Rosaries in all sizes and prices. A profusion of leaves, twigs, sprigs, seeds and roots of herbal medicinal plants, fresh, dried, powdered, bottled or decocted. A veritable army of fortune tellers and stores offering herbal products surround the Quiapo church. The biggest problem underlying the district is piracy and bandits.

Pirated DVD's cost 35 pesos (0.75US$) a piece, 3 for 100 pesos (2.20 US$). Fortune telling at 100 pesos. Philippine Handicrafts start at 100 pesos. Counterfeit Shirts start at 300 Pesos. Lots of Other Stuffs to Buy, You can even Buy a Counterfeit College Diploma of your Choice for 700 Pesos.

Bonifacio High Street, which is a mixed-use development with high-end retail shopping, residential and commercial office components, is part of the 36-hectare Bonifacio Global City center. Besides the commercial and residential buildings, it also has parks and restaurant rows that cater to the A and B market.

This is the perfect place to walk your dog, take the kids shopping, and even have coffee with the ladies, all at once. Resembling the Sta. Monica promenade outside Los Angeles, California, this is as innovative as Manila. Many of your favorite SSI shops are there and a couple of flagship stores make the place even more exciting and refreshing.

Flip Flops at Havianas, Donuts at Krispy Kreme, Shirts at Crocs and a lot lot more!

Much, this is a High Class Area comparable to Ocean Center of Hongkong or Orchard Road of Singapore

Greenhills "Tiangge" (Hawker Stalls): Greenhills Shopping Complex
  • Tip Rating:
  • Greenhills Shopping Center in Manila is a tiangge (tent like or Hawker's Center) style shopping mall located in San Juan region of Metro Manila. Bounded by Ortigas Avenue on the west, Connecticut Street on the south, Club Filipino and Annapolis Street on the north and Missouri Street on the east, this shopping center contains many malls, entertainment and dining outlets.

The most notable among the malls is V mall formerly known as Virra Mall. V Mall helped in boosting reputation of Greenhills shopping center and standing as a challenge to its rival shopping complexes. V mall contains computer shops, boutiques, SM Prime's Stores, a bookstore and an excellent food court.

LifeStyle Center houses a sport center and furniture, old coins and other antique items. If you want to see a movie along with some shopping, then Theatre Mall is the best option as it contains good movie theatres along with some boutiques, software shops and dining options.

From designer wears to accessories, Greenhills Shopping Center is a very busy bargain center where you can find everything at affordable prices. Manila Greenhills shopping center has three sections: main Greenhills complex, Unimart Supermarket and V Mall. Clothes, shoes, computers, cell phones, designer bags, electronic goods, designer wardrobe are some of the items that you can buy at this shopping center of Manila.

Greenhills is a shopping paradise. Clothes, shoes, native souvenirs, computers, cell phones, knock-off designer bags and wallets, toys, children's apparel... these are just some of the items that you can shop for at Greenhills. The Greenhills Shopping Center is divided into three parts: Virra Mall shopping center, the main Greenhills complex, and the Unimart Supermarket. Anyone can find great deals on every shop. It is recommended to go there in mid-morning, where the sales ladies can give shoppers a first-customer discount or 'Buena Mano'. Haggling at half the price is a must because some stalls put up a mark-up on items based on the person's looks. food stalls and fast-food restaurants are all around the area when you get hungry; just be careful with drinking water served by the restaurant.

Greenhills is great for clothes, discount cellphones, jewellery including very cheap Philippines freshwater pearls, and some pirated goods. It used to be the place to buy high quality and cheap pirated DVDs and computer software, but after a recent piracy clampdown, the DVD vendors have now relocated to the 2nd floor of the EDSA CENTRAL market on the corner of EDSA and SHAW BLVD (also neighbouring the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel). Expect to pay no more than 50-70 pesos per DVD ($1.10 to 1.44). Some vendors have a tv where they will demonstrate the quality.

50-70 pesos per DVD ($1.10 to 1.44), 500 pesos for a counterfeit ralph lauren jeans, 800 pesos for fake nike shoes, 150-200 pesos for fake perfumes like davidoff or calvin klein, 600 pesos for anne klein "loft" women's polo shirt (export overrun hence original), 800 pesos for ralph lauren polo shirts (again export overrun). 600 pesos for silk bags (cheaper in Sai Gon at 350 pesos). A lot, lot more!

Shangrila Plaza Mall: Elegent Mall in Ortigas District
  • Tip Rating:
  • Undergoing a series of renovations since 2000, Shangri-La Plaza has transformed itself into the premier urban destination where patrons can enjoy all aspects of the good life. From its newly designed shell, lush landscaping and recently-opened Streetscape (facing Internal Avenue) lined with restaurants and cafes, the exterior of the mall is a mere prelude of the delights awaiting within. Internal Avenue and Shaw Boulevard entries are equipped with 5-meter-high revolving doors, while a glass bridge leads customers directly to the Grand Atrium. Nearly 175,000 square meters in area, Shangri-La Plaza boasts of not only a plethora of retailers, but also spacious hallways for leisurely strolling window shoppers, plenty of streaming natural light and an expansive Grand Atrium.

This posh shopping mall encompasses three department stores (Rustan's Tower, Crossings and Marks & Spencer), name brand boutiques (Armani, Polo and Cerruti, among others), specialty stores, cafes, restaurants, game centers, the William J. Shaw Theater and Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum. Foreign visitors will be pleased to know the mall is located just a minute away from the Edsa Shangri-La hotel and connected to the MRT Shaw Boulevard station by a walkway. Cheap and cheerful dining at the Food Court in the basement.

Zones are designed for every kind of shopper, from the young to the connoisseur; each marked with quality choices from a wide selection of brand name stores, food services, hobby stops, and activities that suit the mall's target audience.

This mall includes Rustans, one of the city's more highbrow department stores. The plaza is eight levels of upscale and exclusive shopping experiences. Three department stores grace the complex: Rustan's, Marks & Spencer, and Crossings. There's a Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum if you feel like a little stress relief after a hard day's shopping. Food is plentiful. And designer boutiques like Polo and Armani are sprinkled throughout the mall. While Shangri-La Plaza is more exclusive then most of Manila's shopping malls, there are some bargain stores in the mix.

Shopping at the Shangri-La is always a pleasure because its store mix is perceived to be very high-end, you have less of the crowd than in the neighboring SM Megamall. It doesn't feel claustrophobic at all and shopping is stress-free and enjoyable and it is always good to unwind at the Level 1 Streetscape of the Mall either at Starbucks or at the Hula-Hula Hawaiian Restaurant! come now!

A Lot since this is High-End, it's like Central World in Bangkok or Ocean Center in Hongkong.

The Promenade contains cinemas (Digital and THX), high end restaurants and bars (Like Teriyaki Boy, Tender Bob's, Cibo), KTV, concert hall, and book shops. It is Trendy and upscale and is designed to compete against other promenade style shops of other malls in Manila like in Shangrila Plaza Mall, The Strip of SM Megamall, Metrowalk in Ortigas District, Bonifacio High Street.

High End Books, A Large Variety of International and Ecletic Cuisine's, Beers and Cocktails.

Meals at restaurants average around 250-350 pesos per order ($ 5.50 to 7.50), A Movie cost 120 Pesos ($ 2.50, way cheaper than in the states where matinee hour movies cost $ 5 and $ 10 starting 6:00 pm).

Duty Free Philippines Fiesta Mall: A Balikbayan and OFW Tourist Trap!
  • Tip Rating:
  • the Fiesta Mall in the Largest Duty Free Shopping Mall in the philippines and is owned by the government. It has a wide selection of foreign and local stuffs (unfortunately, it doesn't measure up to other duty free shops in the region)

Caveat: You Have to Be A foreign tourist w/ passport, or local who returned abroad from a trip, and OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker), or a "Balikbayan" (filipino expatriate) to be able to shop here and for foreigners and balikbayans and OFW's, the limit is $ 2,000 and for locals, the limit is S 1,000.

You are given up to 2 days after arrival to shop here (a weird thought since in other countries, you can shop duty free anytime as long as you present your passports to the counters)

it has a modest food court for shoppers (but i suggest to go to La Copa Restaurant which is nearby for the food fix).

for OFW's, Locals and Balikbayans, Pasalubong (gifts) for the whole village (pun intended), for foreigners, Liqours, Cigarettes, Perfumeries, and other stuff.
