manila ocean park
don't have high expectations especially if you've been to hong kong's ocean park or seaworld in san diego as you might be in for a disappointment. but if you've never been to those places (or have been but have less than high expectations of manila ocean park) then you'll find going here an enjoyable experience especially if you're a lover of all things the water has to offer.

the manila ocean park is a huge complex that is planned to be composed of an oceanarium, a mall, and an open habitant. at present only the oceanarium is open. at the entrance are various restaurants you can dine in before or after your tour.

the oceanarium is divided into 5 sections (agos, bahura, laot, buhay na karagatan, ang kalaliman) to categorize the different marine animals that live in those areas. the highlight would be the "buhay na karagatan" or living ocean where you'll walk along an underwater tunnel where you'll get the feeling of being in the middle of the ocean while marine animals swim above and beside you.

the tour of the oceanarium can last from anywhere between 1hour to 2 hours depending on how fast or slow you want to do the tour. admission is P400 for adults and P350 for kids. price is, for me, a bit unreasonable considering they don't have a ton of marine species compared to other oceanariums i've been to. but i guess they had to consider the upkeep of the place in setting the price. there's a pay parking lot inside the park while outdoor parking can be found at the luneta grandstand area. the park is open mondays to fridays from 10am - 9pm and saturdays and sundays from 9am to 9pm. we went on a sunday afternoon and there weren't that much people which was a good thing. they say it gets busy during weekdays and saturdays due to school fieldtrips. i suggest going there late in the afternoon or early morning on a sunday when there's less crowds.

    San Sebastian Church
San Sebastian Church is the only steel gothic church in Asia. The pre-fabricated steel is from Belgium. It is one of UNESCO world heritage. The church is beautiful inside out with impressive altars.

    Malacanang Museum
I find Malacanang Museum quite interesting. Inside you can find the elegant offices, ballroom, dining area used by the former dictator Marcos. The guide also pointed to us the terrace where the Marcoses addressed their followers during their final moments in the palace before he was ousted. Arts, sculpture & paintings are available for viewing. A huge library can also be found as well as the memorabilia of past presidents. Gifts from other states are also displayed. Picture taking is allowed inside. I was hoping to see Imelda's shoes but they were already transferred to Marikina Shoe Museum. Entrance fee is minimal. You have to set an appointment first by sending or faxing a letter.

    Star City
The kids had so much fun in Star City. They liked the new Snowtown very much. Downside is they have to queu for an hour just to get inside. To go back inside, you have to queu for an hour again. Be prepare to get very cold inside but jackets are provided. Dino Island is not so great though according to my son. He went inside only once. As for us adults, we are just satisfied to watch people enjoy their dizzying rides amid screams. I can't imagine myself riding those rides coz I get dizzy easily.

    Dining
  • Tip Rating:
  • Trip to Manila is not complete unless you enjoy countless dining opportunities. City is home of many shopping malls, each has its own "food court" in addition to numerous restaurants within the buildings.

Further there are several locations spread all over Manila that should not be missed like Greenbelt area in Makati, Libis in Quezon City, Metrowalk in Ortigas.

There are also several "Dampas" offering fresh sea food. Dampas are series of sea food restaurants located next to fish markets where customers can even go and buy fresh fish, shrimps, crabs, lobsters etc. These restaurants will then cook for you for cooking charges levied on per kilo basis. Dampas are my personal favorites for the quality and taste. However food is expensive as mostly cost of seafood equals to cooking charges. I have so far visited three dampas; one near NAIA, second in Pasay city near Mall of Asia and the third one is in Ortigas inside Ortigas Home Depot. Give it a try....

    Mall of Asia
  • Tip Rating:
  • This mall is among the world's largest shopping malls, inaugurated in May 2006. While it provides all the facilities under one roof that can be expected from a huge shopping mall, but one thing differentiates it from the others. This year "San Miguel by the Bay" walking strip has been opened. Nice place to sit, walk or dine along Manila bay. To me this is the best open air place in Manila to go and feel yourself cool with the surroundings.

    Fort Santiago
  • Tip Rating:
  • Fort Santiago is part of Intramuros and is located at the mouth of Pasig River. Before Spanish era, it was site of the palace of Kingdom of Rajah Suliman. It was destroyed by Spanish army in 1570 as a result of bloody battles with locals. It was completed in 1592 and later served not only as hub for spice trade to America and Europe for more than three centuries but was also considered a strategic defense location.

During WWII, it was captured by Japanese and later in 1945 sustained heavy damages during t he war of 1945. Today the place serves as museum which houses legacies of Jose Rizal who is national hero of Philippines. He was executed here in 1896. His final foot steps are now embedded onto the ground that represents his final walk from the cell to the place of execution.
