Fort Santiago

by iwys

Fort Santiago is a fortress built for Spanish conquistador, Miguel López de Legazpi. The fort is part of the structures of the walled city of Intramuros in Manila. The location of this site was also once the palace of Rajah Suliman, the chief of Manila. It was destroyed by the conquistadors in 1570, during several battles with the Muslims and native Tagalogs. The Spaniards destroyed the native settlements and erected Fuerza de Santiago in 1571.The first fort was made out of log structures and earth. Most of it was destroyed in the Spanish-Chinese War of (1574-1575), by invaders of ethnic Chinese pirates who besieged the area. The Spaniards fought a bloody conflict and eventually drove the pirates out. In 1589 the fort was reconstructed with stone and finished in 1592. It became the main fort for the spice trade to the Americas and Europe. The famous Manila galleon trade to Acapulco,...

Say a Prayer at the Memorial Cross in Ft. Santiago

by cyndymc

On the way to Rizal Shrine in Fort Santiago, you will see the Memorial Cross. I noticed some Japanese looking at the Memorial Cross, and wondered what they were talking about, but I smiled at them to show that we Filipinos don't hold grudges against Japanese whose ancestors committed atrocities during World War II. The Memorial Cross was erected to give tribute to the nameless Filipino prisoners whose bodies were found lifeless in the nearby dungeons of Fort Santiago during the last days of the war in 1945. When you see it, don't just pass by it; say a prayer for the Filipino martyrs and for the healing of emotional wounds caused by the war.

Recall Jose Rizal's Last Moments in Fort Santiago

by cyndymc

Jose Rizal is our national hero. Inside Fort Santiago is the Rizal Shrine, where his manuscripts, relics and paintings are displayed in a Museum, and replicas of him can be seen in the room where he is believed to have written Mi Ulitimo Adios (My Last Farewell), and in the prison cell where he spent his last moments before being shot in Luneta.

Wow Philippines Cultural Exhibit

by cyndymc

When we were at Memore-Manila 1945 Monument, we noticed colorful flags across the street. We walked towards the area and to our delight, we discovered the Wow Philippines Clamshell. There was an ongoing Cultural Exhibit of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The different regions of the Philippines alternate in setting up their exhibits to promote their culture, products, tourist spots. Admission is free. The different provinces in the region have their own exhibit booths. Products are sold at big discounts. Flyers and brochures re: tourist spots are distributed to guests, and in the afternoons, there is a cultural presentation (dance, customs, etc)

Honor War Victims at Memore-Manila 1945 Monument

by cyndymc

We discovered this monument by accident, as we strolled on the streets of Intramuros. Just behind Manila Cathedral, you'll find a monument called "Memore-Manila 1945". The monument was erected to serve as gravestone to the numeorus nameless Filipino victims of World War II whose lifeless, burned and/or crushed bodies were found underneath the ruins. They were either victims of the atrocities of the Japanese Imperial Forces or casualties of the massive artillery barrage of American Forces.

Palacio del Gobernador

by cyndymc

Former domicile of Manuel Estacion de Venegas, a governors' aide. The original 2-floor structure was expropriated and later made the official residence and office of the Spanish governor-generals in 1654. When an earthquake ravaged it down in 1863, it lay in ruins for almost a century until the Land Bank of the Philippines built an 8-storey building on the site in 1978. COMELEC & the office of Intramuros Administration hold office here

Stroll at Plaza de Roma

by cyndymc

Just across Manila Cathedral is Plaza de Roma. Initially known as Plaza Mayor in1797, it had undergone some name changes: Plaza MacKinley (to honor former US Pres. William MacKinley)in1901, and Plaza de Roma in1961 (to honor Rome's Sacred College of Cardinals) after the elevation of the 1st Filipino Cardinal, Rufino J. Santos. The Plaza centerpiece is the bronze monument of Carlos IV of Spain in the middle of the fountain. The monument was erected in 1824, while the fountain was built in 1886.Today, Plaza de Roma is the favorite site of photo shoots for pre-nuptial or newly wedded couples. Tourist also love to have pictures at the fountain.

Visit Manila Cathedral

by cyndymc

The Manila Cathedral is known as Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Manila during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines and today, it remains the ecclesisastical seat of the Archdiocese of Manila. From the time the first church was built in 1581 made of indigenous materials (nipa and bamboos), it had sufferred structural damages wrought by natural calamities like typhoons and earthquakes throughout the ensuing centuries. A number of reconstructions were made, and a magnificent cathedral built from 1870 to 1879 had as unique feature, the center cross of the dome which is a reference point of astronomical longitudes of the archipelago. Unfortunately, this magnificent architectural masterpiece was also toppled into ruins by the bombs of World War II in 1945. The Cathedral was reconstructed years after, from 1954 to 1958 with the support...

Kinderzoo

by Jim_Eliason

Although much smaller than the regular zoo, this is one fun place! Its feature is an up close ability to touch and hold the animals. Unlike children zoos in America, this is not just an assortment of sheep and goats. Here you can hold crocodiles, Boa constrictors and variety of birds.
