an innovation, wanna want to try the durian pie? This is among the quaint davao foodie specialties wherein you make durian fruits into ready made pies that are either malodourous or fragrant, depending on who is smelling it. The durian pie was made by the local Ms. Virginia G. Sanz who had sensed that the famous buko pies of Laguna Province in Luzon were popular hence she tried to replicate the pies using durian here in davao and the rest is history. the Durian Pie taste what else but durian hehehe with a tinge of creaminess and a box will cost 150 pesos and is available in shops around davao city and at the departure terminal of the airport.

this is a new invention and they say that is has a low glycemic index, meaning it does not digest fast hence does not overload the body in glucose production hence is suitable for diabetics. The raw coco sugar granules is dark brown in color like the moscuvado sugar from cane. It tastes like an ordinary cane sugar but with a difference, it smells like burnt coconut meat. The sugar particles look rough, but felt soft in one’s hand, easily melted in the mouth and tasted only slightly sweet.Coco Sugar is derived from the evaporating coconut sap or sweet toddy (tuba as it is known locally) through boiling in an open container where it is then allowed to cool and solidify. Coco sap if distilled, it turns into wine ( lambanog a local name which is commercially available). If it is fermented it turns into vinegar. If cooked it turns into coco sugar. a 250 mg jar will cost 145 pesos and a 500 mg jar will cost 290 pesos and is available in most shops in Davao City.

I was concerned on what to tip here..but no one tips.. I watched carefully the locals as they got their change for meals.Even when we did, the waiter said he couldn`t take it unless we placed it in his pocket for fear of getting fired for stealing. I did usually let the taxi drivers keep the change because most ries were a dollar or less.
