Church around the corner

Our first stop in our DIY city tour is the Dumaguete Cathedral to check the mass schedule. We prefer an English mass, however all scheduled masses were in Cebuano (their dialect). Upon inquiry from the hotel staff, we were referred to the Immaculate Concepcion Church along San Jose St. It is about 50m from the corner where Jollibee is situated. The English mass every Saturday is at 5:15pm, while there are 3 every Sunday: 6am, 7:15am and 8:30am.

Malatapay Wednesday Market

Malatapay is located about 20 minutes south of Dumaguete in the town of Zamboanguita. On a regular day it is a relatively quiet patch of coconut trees and huts and a beach that serves as the jump off point for Apo Island. It is in the middle of the week when it springs to life, and like a sleeping giant whose slumber is disturbed, it awakens with a roar and rages on all day.People from neighboring towns, from villages up in the mountains and even from nearby islands bring their products here so there is a wide variety of items. Aside from the usual fare of fresh fish and meats, you there are also grains and feeds, dried fish, dried tobacco leaves, knives, ropes, mats, live chickens, produce, kitchenware, native handicrafts, farming implements, fishing implements, bread, shoes, and clothes. Somehow I was surprised, and yet not really, to see pirated DVD’s for sale, complete with a 14 inch...

Beside the Luce Auditurium (the Center for Culture and Arts in the Central Visayas) inside Silliman U campus are Impressionist Sculpture Works relating to the arts. The beautiful figures line the left side of the auditurium.

Located in Valencia, which is less than an hour away from Dumaguete, this place serve as a celebratory place for local people. Dumaguetenos love to go to beaches, falls or any H20 bodies when celebrating an occasion.

Apo Island

One of the biggest coral, marine conservatories in the world, Apo island is an underated, cheap diving haven. It's 2 1/2 hours away by a small motorized boat. Additionally, this is the place where I got my PADI certificate when I was 13 or 14.
