Manila is the famous city in...

by palmesian

Manila is the famous city in the Philippines because the center of government is located there. However, if you would like to taste the typical life of Filipinos, don't just stay at the big city. Our country is composed of many islands and each island is populated by people speaking their own dialect. The true spirit of Filipino life can be felt by spending your time in these small islands. In Manila, life is very westernized and the behavior of the people is largely influenced by this western culture. The picture shows a typical hut that usually can be found along the beach. Staying in this hut is a refreshing feeling especially during summer. You don't need any airconditioning because the material of this hut is a good insulator and ventilation against summer heat. Staying in this place without doing anything - no one around except yourself --- full of silence......

Puerto Galera (Mindoro)

by eddymario

Puerto Galera (Mindoro) is the closest tropical paradise, from Manilla, take a bus to Batangas and a ferry to the island.Good beaches, White beach (relaxed place, not to many tourists),Sabang ( busy place, but best spot for scuba diving, nice coral reef)

imho's General Tip

by imho

Baguio City is oftentimes considered a 'cheesy' tourist destination, even by Manila folk, perhaps because of its campy attractions like the manmade lake on Burnham Park or the view (or what's left of it) from Mines' View. But the Philippines' Summer Capital will always have a special place in my heart. And there's a lot more to it than pine trees and strawberry jam! (please see my Baguio travelogue for more)

Swimming with the whale sharks (butanding) in Donsol, Sorsogon. The magnificent creatures gather in large numbers from November to May every year in the waters of Donsol to feed on plankton, and in January we had the opportunity to swim with four of these gentle giants (in just one morning!). The 13 hour land trip down South was well worth it!

Head up North to see what is considered the 8th wonder of the world: the Banaue rice terraces. While you're in the area, spend a week, a month, a lifetime! in the quiet mountain village of Sagada, Mountain Province (please see my Sag da travelogue for more details).

Spend at least a few hours in Tagaytay City. It's one of my favorite places in the country; best of all, it's only about an hour and half from Manila. The weather is pleasant, the view of the Taal volcano spectacular...a great place to just hang out with friends.

by imho

get rid of your watch...as well as all inhibitions. Plunge into the culture, enjoy the locals' hospitality, see as many of the islands as you possibly can. There are just too many to enumerate. Watching the sky turn pink as the sun sets in Boracay; hiking up the well worn mountain trails of Sagada and discovering nature's sculptures in Sumaguing Cave; scuba diving off Anilao, Batangas; walking through the cobbled streets of Vigan; listening to the heavenly sound of the Malaybalay Boy's Choir during high Mass in Bukidnon; wandering all over Camiguin island...I could go on and on.

by miner

There is a little town called San Jose that we visited in 1971 and we were the first American ship that had been there in years. To the children we were apparently big news. While we ate at the restaurant there were little faces pressed against the windows so they could see the strangers in town. We were invited to the school for a special program. We were given the V.I.P. seats on the front row in the middle. They really rolled out the red carpet for us. The school had a festival with the school kids all participating representing their idea of different cultures around the world. The United States was presented as a cowboy country.

Major Attractions: There are countless spectacular sights scattered throughout the nation, including the Chocolate Hills of Bohol in the Visayas; The volcanic crater Lake Taal, southeast of Manila; the burial caves of Sagada, 11miles from Bontoc; The easygoing and beautiful port city of Cebu, where Magellan marked the beginning of Christianity in the Philippines by erecting a cross; in the early 1500's.
