Christmas 09 n the Phillippines

by bulldogtwo

Yes the Phillippines is a christian country, 95%+ Catholic so they celebrate Christmas in a big way. Your biggest problem would be timing your travel plans around the time everyone goes home to celebrate as the buses will be packed! and the roads busy. I would say at least 3 days before, up to Christmas day and the same for New Years to extend to 2-3 days after NY's day. Expect it to be busy and seats limited. Patience is the name of the game, which can be said for any time you are traveling in PI. You may also want to check with your accomodations to make sure they do have or not have "compulsary dinners" and higher rates. Most of them will have this over the holidays on Christmas and New Years day. Sometimes the rates can be as much as 3X the normal rate, so be prepared for that.Good luck and have FUN!

getting into the u.s.

by noli

ok, here's a way to get your nephew into the u.s.he needs to fly to mexico and make his way to a city called tijuana or any border city will do. then he needs to make friends with the locals and ask for a "coyote" to take him across the border so he can visit his dying uncle. coyotes don't take philippines pesos so load up on mexican ones.if your nephew gets caught by any u.s. federal agencies please advise him to inform them that he was merely hand delivering his visa application to the state department because mail frequently gets lost in the philippine postal system. please do all these things while smiling at the officials. they love it when people smile. oh, i would also suggest your newphew say that if he were a citizen of the u.s. that he would have voted for obama.i hope this helps.

some info

by Cess8

Hi, hope this helps....It depends if you are travelling alone or with someone. If you are with a travel buddy or buddies, then travel gets cheaper because you share expenses such as for the room, taxi etc. I actually am of the idea that cost of living here is cheaper than most countries, including Thailand, maybe its just me, or because i'm a local.Rooms here start at around 20 USdollars per night. As an alternative, try couchsurfing.com for a free place to stay. CS Manila is a very fun-loving and accommodating bunch. Contact a local, a friend will most probably invite you to stay with them :)Price for transport 4-8 hours (you mean you are going somewhere that takes that long for travel, most probably by bus) is around 400-800 pesos or around 8-16 USD.21 days is certainly not enough if you plan to travel from north to south of the island, but if you are concentrating on one area or...

hiring transport

by henkvan

Hi, Saw your request for transport. Confused about the dates but I'm thinking you may be better off just getting a big taxi such as tamaraw. You can negotiate on a daily basis (with or without food/accommodation for the driver) or perhaps just a vehicle rental if you can drive. By the way, I am a retired Australian journalist/travel writer with a 20-plus years connection with PI and still do assignments for a Filipino magazine. Would like to hear how it all went if only for the sake of my readers. Just came back fom 1 month in PI, visited Leyte and did a tourist article on the resorts around Barrio Barretto, Olongapo. Enjoy your trip and good luck, hide emung pera!! Cheers, Henk.P.S. Have written similar email to your home page.

Strangers in the Phillippines!

by bulldogtwo

Asianbelle is correct in what she says, I have experienced that many times while visiting. The filipino's are very concientious of strangers and their ability to speak "good" english. Once they warm up to you it's usually fine, and who speaks really good english anyway!?I would add a couple of other issues to this as well. There definitly is a general "fear" in the country, and it is different from the province than in the city. I once approached a police officer in the city, tapped them on the shoulder to ask directions and they about jumped out of their skin. I approached form their side so it wasn't like it was a total surprise to them. I have heard many theories. Some I think are correct, some not. I also do not believe that there is any single answer. I saw this same thing in some other countries I lived and worked in, and if you look back in their histories some of it does make...

Philippine Sweets

by machomikemd

endless array of sweet delights and assorted rice cakes to tickle your tongue! In the Philippines, glutinous rice is known as malagkit (literally "sticky" in Tagalog), glutinous rice flour is known as galapong. The rice grains are treated with a solution of lye and then dried, then the grains are poured into a banana leaf cone or cocount leaf wrapper and steamed. It may be mixed with sugar, coconut milk, or other grains such as millet. Glutinous rice cooked in coconut leaf or banana leaves wrappers are steamed to produce "suman," of which there are many varieties depending on the region. Some of the common toppings are "bukayo", grated mature coconut cooked in sugar, coconut jam, and freshly grated coconut. Some regions eat suman as a snack with ripe mangoes or bananas.A general term for sweet rice cake, "bibingka" mainly consists of glutinous rice cooked with coconut milk. Another...
