    Whaleshark (Butanding) Watching
  • Tip Rating:
  • Whalesharks are the largest Mammal earth and despite their name, they are gentle and non violent plus they are not carnivores but just eat planktons (sea algaes). Before 1997, the world’s most popular whale shark tour was in Ningaloo Reef, West Australia, where hopefuls enlisted the aid of a light spotter plane. Aside from being rather pricey ($350 to $500 or P16,650 to P23,790 per person), whale shark interactions were not guaranteed but little did the world know that for years, fishermen from an unknown town in Sorsogon were shooing away dozens of friendly, lumbering sharks bumping into their nets. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), a global conservation group, has played a crucial role in establishing community-based ecotourism here in Donsol Town. Donsol, situated 540 km southeast of Manila, has quite possibly, the world’s highest aggregation of whale sharks. Though found in other places such as Australia and the coast of Zanzibar in Tanzania, Donsol’s giant residents are unique because they stay within a kilometer from shore.

Boats for Whaleshark watching can be rented daily for 700 pesos a day (for 6 people a boat) but whaleshark watching is seasonal since whalesharks only appera during the months of february to june and they surface only from 7:00 am to 11:00 am so this is a seasonal endeavor but well worth it. Just bring your own gear like scuba, snorkel, fins, etc since renting here is pricy.

  • Directions: Donsol, Sorsogon is approximately 1-hour drive away from Legazpi City.

    Hiking at Lignon Hill
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the place where the locals usually do their jogging or just simply walking. On top of the hill it offers a great view of the city of Legaspi, the Gulf of Albay and of course the Mt. Mayon.

The station for Mayon Volcano Observatory is also located here. As of this writing, the Mayon volcano is having mild eruptions(http://www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph/Volcano/Volcanolist/mayon.htm)

    Hello Pili
  • Tip Rating:
  • Introduce yourself to Pili, the regional tree, unique to the Bikol region and grew in isolated parts in the Visayas as well. It's an unassuming tree, not immediately observable to an untrained eye, but they abound the region.

What's ultimately different about this tree is its pili fruit or nut (Canarium ovatum). Green in color and symmetrical 4-7 cms fruit when young, it turns blue-black as it grew ripe. The nut-fruit's pulp is edible, boiled to softness and tastes close to sweet potato. Pili is generally known for the hard-encrusted nut which houses a delicious kernel, even superior to almond. The pili kernel is processed dry-roasted, slightly sweetened, or candied and can be bought widely in Bikol and other parts of the Philippines.

There's no better place to marvel at majestic Mayon volcano but on Lignon observatory hill, located at the outskirts of Legaspi City near the airport.

This is the usual site where scientists and media congregate to observe the volcano's active state and during times of active eruptions.

On a very clear day, one will see the recent lava flow in 2001 which devastated new towns and shaped the landscape anew.
