The New Must-See Place: The Embarcadero

by cyndymc

Walking distance from Legaspi Tourist Inn is The Embarcadero, a waterfront development located at the harbour area of Legaspi City, adjacent to the Kapuntukan Hill. It is Legaspi’s newest commercial and entertainment center with boutiques, retail stalls, restaurants and cafes, bars, and arcade. Althoug the entire complex is not yet fully completed, the Embarcadero has already become a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists. The Celebration Plaza (for live band performances & other events), promenade (where people can enjoy a magnificent view of the majestic Mayon Volcano, the cityscape to the north and the Albay Gulf to the east), and the lighthouse (with theatrical lighting at night) are the favorite places of shoppers, diners and tourists. Like the SM Mall of Asia, The Embarcadero aims to provide a family-friendly place from morning till night though its wholesome and...

Marvel at Mayon volcano from Lignon Hill

by Yla

There's no better place to marvel at majestic Mayon volcano but on Lignon observatory hill, located at the outskirts of Legaspi City near the airport. This is the usual site where scientists and media congregate to observe the volcano's active state and during times of active eruptions. On a very clear day, one will see the recent lava flow in 2001 which devastated new towns and shaped the landscape anew.

Hello Pili

by Yla

Introduce yourself to Pili, the regional tree, unique to the Bikol region and grew in isolated parts in the Visayas as well. It's an unassuming tree, not immediately observable to an untrained eye, but they abound the region. What's ultimately different about this tree is its pili fruit or nut (Canarium ovatum). Green in color and symmetrical 4-7 cms fruit when young, it turns blue-black as it grew ripe. The nut-fruit's pulp is edible, boiled to softness and tastes close to sweet potato. Pili is generally known for the hard-encrusted nut which houses a delicious kernel, even superior to almond. The pili kernel is processed dry-roasted, slightly sweetened, or candied and can be bought widely in Bikol and other parts of the Philippines.

japanese tunnel

by j_con

about 10minutes from the base of the hill, you'll see this tunnel on the left side. there are light bulbs inside the tunnel, it's actually a bit cool inside because the ceiling and walls (stones) are damp.

lignon hill

by j_con

it's about a 30-minute walk to the view deck on top of the hill. you can either have a morning jog or an evening walk to the top. on the way up, you'll see the albay park & wildlife and the legazpi city airport below. there are also food stalls and a new al fresco dining area being constructed on the deck. when on the top, you'll feel like you're standing so close to the volcano. it's such a wonderful experience!

Mayon Rest House

by michy29

If you have the time, hire a car and a driver to take you to this place. It is about an hour from Legaspi City. Mayon Rest House is a few hundred meters above the foot of the Mayon. From here, you will see the entire city of Legaspi, Sto. Domingo and parts of bacacay. A worthy visit. I have been there a years ago, we went in the afternoon, only allowing us an hour before it gets dark. It is best to go there in the morning so you can get good photos. also if you go in the afternoon and decides to head back late, be sure to have a sweater with you. it gets cold in this place.

Cagsawa Church Ruins

by rmcuesta

In 1814, Mt. Mayon, in the province of Albay, the Philippines, erupted and devastated the surrounding communities. This is what remained of the Cagsawa church, whose bellfry has remained standing as a mute testimony of the enormous disaster caused by flowing lava. Some 1,200 people sought sanctuary in the church, thinking that they would be saved from the fury of Mayon volcano. All of them died. One could imagine that, in their last moment, they struggled to climb to this bellfry as others below tried to pull them down. It must be a tragic, horrifying experience.

Cagsawa Ruins

Do not miss the Cagsawa Ruins and its famous bell tower. There was a big eruption couple of centuries ago, leaving only the bell tower of the church. The rest of the church was buried under the lava along with its priests and nuns. Also, it gives one of the most stunning views of Mt. Mayon.
