This probably should be in the 'MUST' do portion of this site...but if you get the chance, spend Christmas with a Filipino family! Filipinos are said to celebrate the longest Christmas season in the world, with festivities beginning on the 16th of December with the Misa de Gallo (Morning Mass). As early as October, Christmas decorations begin to adorn homes and buildings, and radio stations start playing Christmas carols. The highlight of the season is the Simbang Gabi (Midnight Mass), followed by Noche Buena (Midnight Feast). It's the most anticipated time of the year!

The weather pattern across the nation is complex, but can be roughly divided into the dry season (January to June) and the wet season (July toDecember). The average annual temperature is 25°C (77°F). Kamusta ka means...

by Tankermage

Kamusta ka means 'hello'Maraming salamat means 'many thanks'Taking an elderly's hand and placing it on your forehead, as though kissing it, is a sign of respect as well as asking them to bless you. Many times, people treat their friends as part of their families therefore will refer to them as uncles (Tito), aunts (tita), big 'brother' (kuya), big sister (ate). Now this is what I've grown up knowing so don't quote me on all that I've said. There are many different dialects that are spoken but all I have siad has been brought down to me by my parents and all those I've known all my life. But I thought it might help you out a little.

Limasawa, Southern Leyte, Philippines is a very beautiful but primitive island. The people are very close and/or clanish (protective). Best if you have a companion for first trip there! If you REALLY wish to visit and seek a companion, contact me at guapocano@yahoo.com Here is a photo of a couple native boys preparing for their fishing trip. Taken at the central Limasawa barangay of Triana.

FILIPINO FOOD ............from a foreigner's point of view. The author is an Englishman who wrote this really funny articleregarding the Filipino food culture.Kainan na... A Matter of TasteBy Matthew Sutherland'A man seldom thinks with more earnestness of anythingthan he does of his dinner.' -- Samuel JohnsonI HAVE NOW BEEN in this country for over six years, andconsider myself in most respects well-assimilated.However, there is one key step on the road to fullassimilation which I have yet to take, and that's toeat balut. The day any of you sees me eating balut, please call immigration and ask them to issue me aFilipino passport. Because at that point t here will be no turning back. Balut, for those still blissfully ignorant non-Pinoys out there, is a fertilized duck egg. It is commonly sold with salt in a piece of newspaper, much like English fish and chips, by street vendors-usually...

It is important to remember...

by sasa2977

It is important to remember that English as spoken in the Philippines sometimes varies wildly from Standard English. For example, the correct answer to a negative question is 'yes' So, if asked the question 'You don't drive, do you? the answer'yes' means yes, that's correct, I don't drive.

Culture Updated on March 22, 2001 Genaral InformationBoracay island is a part of Visayas and their culture is slightly different from Manila's. However many workers come from Manila and other part of the Philippines.(Photo: Students after school) LanguageEnglish is one of the official languages of the Philippines and there are no communication problems in English. They are the best English speakers in Asia.
