religion

by shohman

The Philippines is the only Asian country that is predominately christian. I shocking percentage, something like 90% of those 90%, maybe 95% of those are catholic. Many are deeply, DEEPLY religious. You will see shrines to the virgin Mary in some unlikely places (a cove on a beach for instance. People here are so catholic, in fact, that when one tells a Filipino they aren't catholic, they will often get a strange look or perhaps even, a shocked "not Catholic?!..what do you mean??" more than once, I was told by people the dangers of being sent to Hell if I wasn't catholic. But get this, on top of the religion, many are very superstitious. When in the rainforest, I pointed at some trees and I was admonished for pointing. When I asked why, I was told that there is a legend that very tiny people who live in those trees come out at night and steal people, never to be found again. This was a...

fruits

by shohman

oh, the fruits here are so good, so different, and so unavailable in the States (I believe Canada allows imports from the Philippines) Mango - This is the main export of the Philippines and they are amazing. the mangoes here are lightly sweet and have a touch of spiciness to them. They are absolutely fabulous.Pineapple - Sweet, but not acidic like we have in the states. Again, these are amazing.Banana - These are smaller and firmer than we are used to in the states and have a 'gamier' taste. They are great for cooking and I often had fried banana, sliced lengthwise with breakfast. Street vendors will also sell banana-que which is a fried banana coated in brown sugar on a stick. mmmm.serguellas - ok, this is my absolute favorite fruit. it's small and round, perhaps like a very tiny apple in looks. But the taste is amazing. The best I could compare it to is a sweet, rhubard taste. Pulpy...

Weird snacks

by EdVallance

The Filipino taste in food is, to say the least, bizarre by Western standards. When cooking chicken they will simply chop up the whole thing, skin, bones, organs, blood, head, feet and all and put it in a dish. Pigs are bred so fatty that they are inedible for me. Street snacks include chicken heads, chicken eggs with a chick inside them (balot) and the chicken feet (adidas as Filipinos call them) shown in this photo. In remoter communities you can try such delights as frog, various birds and giant monitor lizards.

Animistic / spirit worshipping rituals

by EdVallance

Even in villages with churches (this photo was taken in the same village as the one from the above tip) animistic spiritual beliefs hold strong. These were objects made by a babaylan (medecine man) in interior Panay which, along with a sacrificed chicken, were supposed to exorcise a spirit called Sagamlahan from a house where the whole family was sick. Watching how they ate though, all eating with bare hands from the same plate, I guessed this was more the reason why sickness had spread throughout the family.

Psychic surgery

by EdVallance

A form of spiritual healing found only in the Philippines and Brasil. Healers claim to have received a gift from God and can incise with just their fingers. They gather together negative energy then extract it, leaving no mark on the skin. I was VERY skeptical about anything like this but watching and photographing it I could see no trick. When it was performed on me I felt their fingers inside me with a strong burning sensation.

The bahag, or loincloth

by EdVallance

Lots of Mangyan people still wear this in interior Mindoro and can be seen at the markets in coastal towns or villages. The Hanunoo, Buhid, Gubatnon, Ratagnon and Alangan Mangyan groups usually wear a T-shirt whereas .more traditional groups such as the Batangan and Bangon wear just the bahag. I have also seen bahags worn in South Palawan and in Tanudan, Kalinga.

Going to market

by EdVallance

Many mountain-dwelling indigenous groups head to a coastal market once a week to sell crops in exchange for manufactured products or foodstuffs they cannot produce themselves, such as these "Sibuyan Mangyan Tagabukid".

The bolo

by EdVallance

Many indigenous groups who live in the interior of the islands permanently carry bolos, or machetes, with them. When walking jungle paths they take the odd swipe at overhanging vines. When they meet someone coming the other way and stop to talk they almost invariably half-heartedly hack at a nearby tree trunk.

It's just a way of having small talk

by Penelope4

In the Philippines, it is common to be asked "Where are you going?" by friends or neighbors. People don't really care but it's their way of relating to others. You may name a place although you're not really going there if it makes you uncomfortable to answer. Just say goodbye whenever you part ways (even to newly met people) otherwise you'll be considered rude.

Weddings in the Philippines

by Penelope4

If you are invited to a wedding, please DO NOT WEAR BLACK. Men may wear black pants and coloured polo shirts though but wearing totally black will catch a lot of attention and will cause some people to frown.
