The Yoghurt House: Try their yoghurt and pancakes

The best yoghurt and pancake in town. I went there for breakfast and had a nice pancake with banana. Their pancakes are not done before hand, you ordered it, they do it. Unfortunately, they do not have pancakes in the evening for dinner.

For dinner if you can take hot and chilly stuff, they have this VERY HOT Indian curry. Yummy !!

And after dinner, you can hang around while they light up their fireplace.

Cuisina Igorota: Best Budget Meal!

After having breakfast at Cuisina Igorota

Cuisina Igorota is located at the back of Saint Theodore Hospital. From the outside, you will probably mistook the small building where the Cuisina is housed as the hospital's storage area. Nothing fancy about the ambiance either as the interior resembles the typical 'turo-turo'. With regards to food, typical breakfast set of hotdog, egg and unlimited rice (calling all kanin boys and girls) is worth P50. They serve free Sagada mountain tea here.

Yoghurt House: Yoghurt Delight!

Recommended: Fried Chicken Meal

During my last visit (July 2006), the restaurant looked different inside and out. It underwent renovation. Still cozy though but more modern ambiance was emphasized this time. I liked the previous rustic ambiance better.

Yoghurt House serves tasteful international dishes and servings are hearty enough to satisfy the appetite. A typical meal costs around P140pp, including the yoghurt as dessert. For that, I give my TWO THUMBS UP for the Yoghurt House! (Clap! Clap! Clap!)

Favorite Dish: Tuna Vegetable Fried Rice, Carbonarra, Fried Chicken (I hate chicken but this one tastes really good!) and the yoghurt with banana/strawberry/granola toppings!

Masferre's Country Inn and Restaurant: Good Food and Great History

Cheese Omelette (PhP60.00)

Before we ended our first night in Sagada, we were craving for dessert and so, we headed to Masferre's for some coffee and chocolate. The cozy and comfortable eating place became our solace from the cold. We ordered Masferre's special hot chocolate. And since our tastebuds are craving for more sweets, we ordered their lone banana cake too. That's the only option.

The hot choco is a little bit bland. Another block/tablet of hard cocoa would have made it perfect. The banana cake is another story. It's so moist and well, simply heavenly. It's just the right sweetness. It also has crunchy nuts on it and some icing. Yum!

The banana cake sealed the deal for us that tomorrow morning, we'll be there to try their breakfast sets. The following morning, we're back at Masferre's to eat our morning meals. I ordered the Farmer's Pancakes: 2 pancakes, bacon, butter, syrup and some side greens plus Sagada coffee. Ramil ordered the Continental Breakfast set: French bread, fruit (papaya), some greens, bacon/ham, fruit juice and Sagda coffee. Anj ordered cheese omelette and Sagada coffee. Ivee and Candice ordered Filipino meals: tocilog and tapsilog respectively. All breakfast sets comes with a cup of Sagada brew.

Our food choices were great! Aside from filling us until we couldn't take more, they're also good! That's why it's really hard to let go of the spoon and fork.

Favorite Dish: My personal favorite is the banana cake because it's that good. Btw, I took some of the banana cake back in Manila. And the huge piece remained moist and chockful of flavor. I also like their tocino and tapa because despite looking like pieces of charcoal, they're actually chewy and tasty. I also like their own pancake mix. The Sagada brew? We had a hard time finding the right mix of milk and sugar to complement it. It's either too strong or too mild. Either way, it's still a good sip every morning.

Btw, it's not only food that matters here. Who is Masferre? You'll know all about the country's father of photography in this resto. His works are splashed all over this resto's walls. It's seeing the Sagadan ancestors and Kankanaey people through his eyes. Such an impressive man with impressive works.

Shamrock III: Too Slow Too Full

Buttered Chicken (PhP150.00)
4 more images

I was looking for the Shamrock Cafe the moment we stepped in Sagada but we didn't see the main cafe. Just a sign that says it temporarily moved to another cafe which is pretty much on the same location. But we found Shamrock III! That's based on the menu that the guy in Sagada Inn's resto gave us.

I know we were hungry come lunchtime. That was after our Echo Valley / Hanging Coffins adventure. But upon seeing our order from Shamrock III, I knew we were not that hungry!!! Our plates were full to the edge. My order was fried rice with veggies and fried chicken. And man, it was a huge heap of fried rice and two pieces chicken! Haha! Now that's for a huge hungroid. Not for me.

But then the whole meal was tasty. It has the right amount of seasoning. Even what the others ordered looked and tasted good. Not too mention, lots. Anj ordered vegetable fried rice with pork steak. Ramil and Ivee ordered buttered chicken and Candice ordered fried tilapia.

The only problem we had there was that we waited for an hour for the food to arrive. We understood that we went there after lunch hour but since we were the only persons there to eat, then a little bit of faster service could have been rendered. Oh well, it was a slow day after all. Nevertheless, the food was great and filling.

Favorite Dish: It would have to be the chicken. It's crispy and not too salty. Try it!

Cafe St. Joe: Making Mornings Better

Cornsilog (PhP80.00)
4 more images

On our third day in Sagada (and yes, our day of leaving), we went to St. Joseph's for breakfast. The place is just like every local eating place in Sagada. Cozy and wooden. The difference is on the little souvenir shop on the corner.

After giving our orders: longsilog for me and Anj, cornsilog for Ramil and Candice, and hotsilog for Ivee, we went to the shop and browsed for stuff. We found some cute necklaces and pouches there for PhP50.00 and PhP10.00 each respectively.

Back to the food... it's the usual thing. No ordinary taste but I enjoyed the meal. The longganisa was sweet (and bad for me coz I'm not a huge fan of sweet longganisas. I'm biased towards Vigan longganisa). Anyway, the rest of the food was great and really a nice way to start your day in Sagada.

Too bad we didn't get to try their own version of yoghurt.

Favorite Dish: Hmn, not really a dish but the chocolate oatmeal cookies...

Before leaving the resto, I decided to buy a jar of St. Joseph's choco oatmeal cookies for pasalubong. Of course, I ended up tasting the stuff before giving it to my relatives. Hehe! It's not the usual choco oatmeal cookies you buy at the grocery store. It's thinner, sweeter, and crunchier. A real treat!

Alfredo's: Knock on Alfred's Cabin

Sinigang na Bangus (PhP130.00)
4 more images

For our first day dinner in Sagada, we went to Alfredo's. It's a cabin-styled restaurant with wooden table and chairs. There are also some native statues on the corners and indigenous materials on the walls. We occupied a corner table. We decided to order 3 viands and one cup of rice each.

The buttered vegetables was a colorful mix of carrots, potatoes, cauliflowers, etc. The veggies were not that crunchy anymore ut you can really taste the butter on the dish. I really didn't enjoy the pork curry that much. It lacked curry! The pork was a little bit hard ttoo. Hehe. The sinigang na bangus was a delight. It's hot and sour. Perfect as a soup.

It was my first time to taste Sagada's red rice and it was good. It's weird coz there were so many strange tiny objects on the cup of rice. Hehe. Nevertheless, it was softer than the usual.

Favorite Dish: I love the sinigang na bangus! Yum!

Yoghurt House: Gone to Yoghurt Heaven

Yoghurt with Strawberries, Bananas, Granola & Oats
4 more images

It's a small restaurant. It's ceiling is bedecked with Igorot cloths and lamps. The chairs and table are made of wood. The place is nearly full when we entered but we managed to grab a table for five near the door. The menu was simple and short. We picked different meals to sample each category.

I ordered fried rice with vegetables and meat. It's a lightly-seasoned complete meal on a plate. The vegetables are fresh and crunchy and the meat is tender. It's simply delicious, not to mention, filling. I couldn't finish the whole plate! Ivee decided to order the pork stir fry with vegetables and plain rice. The meat strips are covered with a sweet sauce. The veggies are also crunchy and the rice is soft and sticky. Ramil and Candice ordered the java chicken with vegetables and plain rice. The big chicken leg is swimming in a tangy, sweet sauce. Anj stayed away from the rice meals and ordered the mushroom and cheese pasta instead. The aldente pasta and the rich tomato sauce blended perfectly. Plus it has lots of mushroom slices and garnished with strings of cheese. It's creamy and simply delicious.

We were so hungry that we digged in as soon as the food were served. We forgot each other for a moment. Haha! After our delicious late lunch, we ordered dessert.

Anj and Ramil opted for the yoghurt cake. The yoghurt was creamy and sour and sweet. Just by looking at its consistency, it's a far cry from the commercial yoghurts found in grocery stores. Much better than those. The slice of cake, however, was a little bit of a disappointment. It's dry and it crumbled easily on the plate. The cake was also bland and lacked the buttery flavor we were expecting.

Ivee, Candice, and moi chose the complete yoghurt since we can't choose what our toppings will be. Its two scoops of yoghurt with banana slices on the bottom and strawberry preserve, oatmeal, and granola bits on top. The sour yoghurt tickled our taste buds but the added toppings provided the sweetness. It's an enjoyable dessert. Yum!

Favorite Dish: Everything! Haha! And I'm sure the other items on the menu are good as well. Try their yoghurt. I think that's the whole point of eating in Yoghurt House. Although I don't recommend it for those who don't like sour desserts. But then again, it's a whole new experience so might as well try it.

Breakfast of toast, ham & egg. eh! where's the egg?

If you start your breakfast early, you will get to enjoy the quietness of the cafe. We had a simple breakfast of toast, ham and egg with coffee. You can either have it on the ground floor or upstairs..

Favorite Dish: Simple and nutritious.
