by hunwagner These beautiful islands off the north coast of Luzon remain completely unspoilt by tourism. That is unlikely to change too, as they are hard to get to - there are no flights and even boat services are scarce and irregular - especially in the typhoon season! Leave a Comment

by hunwagner Very few tourists ever venture beyond Sagada and Bontoc in Mountain Province, even though this part of the Cordillera is probably home to the most diverse and traditional cultures of the region, as well as absolutely beautiful landscapes and adventurous trekking possiblities. A perfect area to get off the beaten track. Leave a Comment

by hunwagner The province of Kalinga, north of Mountain province, is home to the Cordillera's most famous warrior tribes. Even today, tribal wars are common between villages, and even the Marcos government had to back down against the Kalingas' resistance to damming the Chico River valley here. Nevertheless, the Kalinga are hospitable to visitors who show respect towards them, and villages in the south of this province have preserved traditional architecture to a greater extent than any other part of the Cordillera. by hunwagner The Cordilleran province of Benguet surrounds Baguio and is on the way to Sagada, yet receives few visitors in its own right. This is a pity, as Benguet has a lot to offer. Perhaps its most unique attractions are the mummies of the Ibaloy tribe around the town of Kabayan, which is also a gateway to Mount Pulog National Park. Leave a Comment

Rice terraces by herzog63 The province of Benguet is a very rugged area. There are mountains everywhere. It is a very hard area to grow crops so the locals have terraced the hillsides in order to survive. It is a year round process to maintain the terraces. During the rainy season many of the terraces have collapsed then they have to be totally rebuilt. Leave a Comment

Near Baguio by herzog63 There are so many different types of landscape to see in the Philippines. I enjoy the mountainous area more than hitting the beaches so if your like me head to North-Central Luzon and you will be in the heart of the mountains. Generally the people are very friendly too as they don't see as many tourists as the beach areas. Leave a Comment

Bangaan by herzog63 There isn't much to see except natural beauty and local folks!! The hills are terraced for pIanting rice and other crops. The trails are very easy to follow and actually if you wanted you could continue on for visiting several other villages further down into the valley. If you look at the center of the picture about 3/4's of the way up the photo you can see a hut. That's the hut that my son and I stayed in for 2 nights! It is a traditional Ifugao hut. Our hut is in another village called Batad. I think that is still his favorite place that we have ever stayed in on our 4 trips to Asia! Leave a Comment

by hunwagner Aurora Province is across the Sierra Madre on North Luzon's remote Pacific coast. Its capital Baler has some good beaches that attract some surfers (more locals than foreigners), and the forested mountains provide a beautiful backdrop to the unspoilt coastline. Leave a Comment

by hunwagner The northernmost and least visited province of the Cordillera, Apayao is about as far off the beaten track as you can get. The native Isneg people have abandoned their traditions more quickly than other Cordilleran tribes, but in the remoter villages you may still find examples of traditional architecture that resemble the boat-shaped houses of Sumatra and Sulawesi in Indonesia. by hunwagner The province of Nueva Viscaya is the southern gateway to the Cagayan Valley region. Its western side shares its culture and scenery with the Cordillera, while in the east, the once infamous headhunters of the Ilongot tribe inhabit the Sierra Madre. This is another place to get well of the beaten track, and enjoy trekking through scenic mountains and tribal villages. Leave a Comment
