Kalinga

by hunwagner

The province of Kalinga, north of Mountain province, is home to the Cordillera's most famous warrior tribes. Even today, tribal wars are common between villages, and even the Marcos government had to back down against the Kalingas' resistance to damming the Chico River valley here. Nevertheless, the Kalinga are hospitable to visitors who show respect towards them, and villages in the south of this province have preserved traditional architecture to a greater extent than any other part of the Cordillera.

Lake Sebu & the Tboli

by hunwagner

The interior of southern Mindanao is the home of the colorful Tboli tribe, who live around Lake Sebu. They are also known for their weaving and brasswork, and there is a colorful market by the lake every weekend. The lake itself is quite small and shallow, so the chance to see the Tboli is the main reason to come here.

Tip Photo
Eastern Mindanao

by hunwagner

The east coast of Mindanao is very remote, with small settlements served by irregular transport. This is a beautiful region, and it gets even more so if you leave the coastal road and venture up to the mountains rising inland, where colorful minorities like the Mandaya still practice traditional weaving from abaca fiber.

Lake Lanao & Marawi

by hunwagner

Just inland from the typically Christian north coast province of Lanao Norte is the staunchly Muslim province of Lanao Sur, centred on huge, scenic Lake Lanao. Its lakeside capital Marawi City has a completely different atmosphere from other cities of the country, and is well worth a day-trip from the coast. The Maranao people living in this area are the best craftspeople in the Philippines, and Marawi's bazar is well worth browsing for handicrafts.

Tip Photo
Northern Mindanao

by hunwagner

The northern coastline of Mindanao is close to the Visayas, and some of its off-shore islands like Camiguin and Siargao have developed low-key tourist resorts. Of the towns on the north coast, Cagayan de Oro is the most attractive and has the best facilities and most attractions to visitors. Mountains rise inland from the coast, and they are home to tribal minorities like the Hiligaynon.

Tip Photo
Benguet

by hunwagner

The Cordilleran province of Benguet surrounds Baguio and is on the way to Sagada, yet receives few visitors in its own right. This is a pity, as Benguet has a lot to offer. Perhaps its most unique attractions are the mummies of the Ibaloy tribe around the town of Kabayan, which is also a gateway to Mount Pulog National Park.

Tip Photo
Southern Palawan

by hunwagner

Attracted by the famous landscapes of El Nido and St. Paul National Park, almost all vistors head north from Palawan's capital, Puerto Princesa. It is true that the south is less impressive scenically, but it compensates with being a much more adventurous destination. The native Palawani tribes still live a traditional existence here using blowguns, there are extensive forests inland, while the south-west also has an exotic Muslim feel to it, due to the proximity of Malaysia and the Sulu Islands.

Tip Photo
Mount Iriga & Lake Buhi

by hunwagner

Further to the south-east, Mount Iriga is a smaller volcano rising on the shores of Lake Buhi. The lake is famous as the home of the smallest species of fish that has commercial importance - sadly stocks have been diminishing in recent years.

Tip Photo
Mount Isarog National Park

by hunwagner

Isarog is an extinct volcano rising east of Naga, the major city in the Bicol region. Its slopes are covered in the most extensive forest left in South Luzon, and are a good spot for birdwatching. Climbing to the top can be done in a day, but the peak is overgrown with mossy, stunted forest and there are no good views.

Callao caves

by hunwagner

There are plenty of caves in the limestone hills around the village of Callao, on the western side of the Sierra Madre in Cagayan Province. Apart from the huge Callao Cave (on the photo), most are almost completely unexplored and offer tremendous potential for adventure caving.
