Take a short flight from Manila to the skinny island of Palawan. From the capital, Puerto Princesa, take a jeepney to the north west (about 3-4 hours) to Sabang. then a short boat ride to the Underground River. Take a canoe and explore 4km+ under the mountain with your canoe and flashlight. An amazing experience

Vigan. Old Spanish colonial town. Very charming, historic, quaint, etc. It's definitely looks very different from the rest of the country. A little far, but definitely worth a swing by if you're up north.

Batad. This remote town is not too far from Banaue and the easily accessible rice terraces. You can hire a tricycle to take you to the road leading up the mountain. Then it's a coule of hour's hike up and down the mountain to reach this place. Absolutely incredible. I was going to make it a day trip, but decided to overnight instead. No electricity in the town.. so much the better! Lots of hiking opportunities.

El Nido. This place is amazing. Located in the north of Palawan, the 'last frontier' of the Philippines (though logging activity is still prevalent) this place was not easy for me to get to, especially since I went during rainy season when a lot of the roads were closed. But after a flight to Puerto Princessa, a trip by road to Taytay, then a boat ride up to the northern tip, I arrived at this gorgeous place. El Nido translates to The Nest, and refers to the numerous swallows that nests in the limestone cliffs (and their nests are harvested here to be sold to the Chinese as a delicacy). Though I went at a bad time of year and so I never managed to swim or snorkel, I know that this would have been just incredible to do there! Even though I never got to explore in the water, the town itself is a pretty interesting village, nestled among these high limestone structures and the sea. I did...

Chinatown Manila is truly an adventure off the beaten path. The streets are crowded with so much activity - pedestrians, automobiles, trucks, bikes, and sidewalk markets. There's a lot to see and do here. The Chinese have had a powerful influence on the Philippines, and Chinatown is their epicenter. As you drive northeast out of Roxas City on the island of Panay you leave the rice paddies and move into sugar cane and pineapples. The area becomes more mountainous and rolling. 30 minutes out of the city is a 50 foot tall statue of the Virgin Mary looming on top of one of the taller mountains. It is a popular pilgrimage for the faithful. Apparently a wealthy resident of the area had a daughter that contracted cancer. He vowed and prayed that he would build a statue on top of a mountain to the Virgin Mary if his daughter survived her fight with cancer. She did, and he lived up to his vow. You can take a hike up the mountain to the statue where there is a small outdoor chapel and shelter.

On the island of Panay in the Visayas, like everywhere in the Philippines, there are many churchs and peculiar religious icons to see. One day we rented a van and driver and drove around to see some of them. On the northeast coast of Panay there is a little fishing village whose name I forget. In a shrine in a small home is the mummified remains of a woman found nearby. She has been in this home belonging to one of her descendants for generations. People come from all over the island to pray for fertility. The story is she was killed by her drunken abusive husband one day and was buried by him in a wooden box hidden in the field. Years later, her husband now dead, their son began to hear her voice in his dreams asking him to find her body. After years of search her son found the shallow grave and the wooden coffin. To his amazement and those of the village the body was perfectly...

by fwendorf

Boracay has been given a bad name by some as being too touristy and crowded. They could not be more wrong. We were there in August during the off season which is rainy and cooler. The best season which is much more crowded is probably December through March. The island is only about 5 miles long and one mile wide at its narrowest point. On the southern shore is White Beach which at four miles long and 100 yards wide cannot be beat. The sand comes from the coral surrounding the island and is extremely soft. There are bat caves on the western point of the island but they require a guide. Horseback riding and first class golf is also available. My wife and I hauled our golf clubs 8500 miles for just one round of golf on Boracay. A little extreme but worth it. Snorkling cannot be beat. We rented a boat and snorkling equipment for $16 for 5 hours around Boracay. They took us to several dive...
