Philippines Travel Guide by Jens Peters

General concesus holds that this is the most detailed and updated practical travel guide to the country. The author used to write Lonely Planet's Philippines guide until their ways separated. Note that LP now gets poor reviews for this country!

The country being islands, travelling at times include riding on boats, jeeps, tricycle. Its recommended to bring only back packs and day pack. Well if its only trip to the city, luggage with rollers is okay. Philippines is a tropical country. Hot and humid all year round. March to May are the summer season. July to December are considered as wet season. Cotton shirts, shorts, and jeans are recommended for clothing. Bring sandals esp on going to the islands. No need for jacket, probably wind breaker only during rainy season. Umbrella (small one) is handy. No need to bring toiletries, as there are a lot of 7-11 stores and sari sari stores that sell toiletries on sachet packs. For medical supplies, there are branches of Mercury Drug nationwide, medicines are not expensive and widely available. Except only probably on prescription drugs. On sari sari stores (thousands all over) you could...

Keep you money in a chest purse.Have only little luggage as necessary when traveling inside the country. If you are oversized (XXL) and need bigger sizes than 43 (9 - 10) for your shoes it is difficult to find. Good tailors and shoemakers however all over the country Filipinos do not like to expose themselves to the sun. Therefore, sun tanning lotion is hard to find. In huge malls in the cities, however, available in cosmetic stores but at tremendous prices. Sunblockers extremely difficult to find. Better to bring from abroad. Photo equipment is rather expensive. For smaller tours it is adviseable to bring a small back pack. Carry some small safety locks.Bring some light rubber shoes to protect your feet from hot sand and sea urchins, sharp corals Bring: sunglasses, light hat (if easily sunburned) light sweater for visiting higher regions and suitable clothes for rainy weather.

Always use your common sense.

Do not loose eye contact with your belongings. Do not let your belongings take a hike without you tagging along with it. Do not forget about wearing light clothings since the heat becomes unbearable most of the time. Do not wear expensive jewelries and purses whenever you got out. For those visiting Manila for the first time, make sure you take with you first of all, your regular medicine, medicine for cough, colds, diarrhea, cream for mosquito bites,vita-merfen,etc. Pack sunscreen and mosquito repelant....nothing is more likely to disrupt sleep than if you happen to be in a non airconditioned room and have to battle mosquitos as well !!!!! Do not drink the regular tap Water or you might get Diarrhea. There are lots and lots of bottled water now and you can ask one in any restaurant.Like most places the Philippines has its fair share of bad traits....the most important thing to be...

Have some sort of rain gear. even in the dry season it rain usually twice a day. You can almost set your watch by it. Also Typoons mean lots of rain. An Umbrella is great for the women. Fillipinas use them for the sun. But not men, get a hat. Sun stroke is easy to get in the dry season. Tsinelas(also known as thongs or flipflops) are the every day wear out in the barrio. Most office workers wear them to and from work and change shoes at work. No skimpy clothes out in the barrio. At toursits resorts it is tolorated but only for foriegners. Ladies bring tampons if you want them. They are available in Manilla and tourist spots but expensive. The Phillipines is a very religious country and mostly Catholic outside of western and cental Mindinao, which is Moslem. A girl is suposed to be a virgin and tampons are against virginity but it applies to married women too. Women-travel with a...

Beware of the sun

Packing ListThere are no special things you have to bring with you for the Philippines. Only your towel and your swim suit. It´s a tropical country so don´t forget a cap, sunglasses, sunmilk and something against moskitos like a moskito net. If you are travel on your own then don´t forget a lamp to find your way back to your bungalow. Another useful thing is a universal tool like a swiss knife or something like that. Also some sticky tape. So, take your bag with your camera, your map, your guide, your dictionary, your passport, your money and your flight ticket and fly away.

Be prepared when visiting the tropics.

For dry season, you may want to carry light color cotton shirts, shorts, and comfortable sneakers. However if you plan to have a formal soiree, apparently, you may need to carry something for the evening but make sure 100% cotton. Even sometimes if you are in an air-conditioned room, it feels warm. For rainy season, the same outfit but you may want to include umbrella, a raincoat or rain poncho. Tropical climate tempered by constant sea breezes. There are three distinct seasons: Rainy season is from June to September, cool and dry is from October to February, and hot and mainly dry is from March to May. Typhoons occosionally occur from June to September. The best time to visit the Philippines is during the months of December to February. It is hot and dry. It is less humid. Other places have cool temperature, especially on high-elevated areas such as on Mountain Provinces.

Pakikisama: Closely linked with the desire for social acceptance and approval, pakikisama (conformity, camaraderie) manifests itself in groups of all kinds and ages regardless of class. To maintain pakikisama, Filipinos will yield to group opinion, subjugate ill-feeling beneath a pleasant demeanor, avoid speaking harshly or saying 'No' directly, and will only criticize or reprimand very tactfully. Pakikisama enriches community spirit and can lead to efficient accomplishment of common goals. Buts it's also the reason businessmen may tolerate an inefficient staff, particularly in the case of relatives and friends. It can cause people to socialize beyond their means.
