Mr Kurosawa: Japanese Resto and Bar in Newport Mall

by machomikemd Updated Aug 20, 2014

this is a japanese fusion restaurant cum bar in the sprawling Neport City Mall Catering to Night Habitues of the Casinos and Party People and is owned by a philippine Actor Marvin Agustin, who made it big by being a restaranteur rather than being an actor and together with his business partners, owns a number of Japanese Themed Restaurants Around the Country like this Mr Kurosawa, Sumo Sam, John and Yoko.

Opens: 11:00 am to 3:00 am everyday

    according to their facebook page:

Inspired by the late Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, the flagship restaurant opened last February 12, 2009 at the ground floor of the Eastwood Mall, Libis, Quezon City, promising a new concept in fusion restaurant dining which is a notch higher than what the founders had done before – Japanese cuisine with a touch of European flair. Spearheaded by Corporate Chef Christine Nicole Nicolas and her team of internationally-trained chefs, various innovations were introduced such as French-Japanese items like tempura or gyoza souflaits, steaks and fine wines; Greek-Japanese items like Japanese kebabs and salads; Spanish-Japanese items like the japaella; and Italian-Japanese items such as pastas and pizza. And this is complemented with traditional Japanese favourites such as kobe, teriyaki, tempura, donburi, sushi and sashimi.

Favorite Dish: besides the food, the assorted cocktails like the mai tai, tequila Sun Rise, Tom Collins and Screwdriver for only 125 pesos a glass (it's 200 pesos and up in other joints).

by machomikemd Updated Aug 20, 2014

the best chinese style fried chicken in my youth in Tondo District in Manilahas been reincarnated after a hiatus of 18 years and is now owned by two competing brothers and they are the Original Savory and the Classic Savory and on a visit to Manila, I happened to chance around this Joint although I like the taste of the Classic Savory Fried Chicken More, the Original Savory Restaurant retains the Original Flavor of the Iconic Fried Chicken. This is their Branch Beside the Resorts World Complex in Pasay City.

Opens: 11:00 am to 10:00 pm everyday

    according to their website:

    Our Story

In 1950, the four Ting brothers started a small panciteria in Quiapo. The panciteria served only the lomi at first. After the World War II, they decided to expand their menu to serve more Filipino and Chinese dishes to their loyal customers.

The Ting brothers developed a special recipe for the fried chicken and gravy that became popular not only with the Chinese community, but to the Filipino families as well.

After 60 years, theOriginal Savory’s first branch located at the foot of Jones Bridge still continues to serve the old recipes passed on by the forefathers, maintaining the flavor that elevated its fried chicken to an emulated status.

To date, they expanded to 13 branches bringing the taste of theOriginal Savory closer to our homes.

Favorite Dish: why the original Savory Fried Chicken off course and one whole chicken order will cost 420 pesos an order, and the Nido Birds Nest Soup at 240 pesos for a big bowl, however the retooled Classic Savory Fried Chicken is better. They also have the other Original Savory Dishes like Crab Fried Rice at 380 pesos an order, the Pata Tim at 550 pesos an order, the maki soup at 350 pesos an order and a lot more.

And unlike UCC Coffee which is the Only Japanese Coffe Chain Present in the Philippins, Tokyo Cafe is locally owned but by a Japanese National Married to a Filipina and This Tokyo Cafe has now sprouted in the Philippines 7 branches around the Metro Manila Area. They have bigger restaurants than UCC Coffee Chains as they focus more on the assorted Italian Inspired but Japanese Influenced Italian Meals of which they have like assorted Pastas, Pizza, Japanese Hamburg Steak (Hamburger), Paninis and a lot more.

this is their branch at the SM Mall of Asia

Opens: 10:00 am to 10:00 pm everyday

    according to their website:

Tokyo Café launched in 2006 and planted its roots in none other than the biggest mall in the Philippines, the SM Mall of Asia. Tokyo Café provides bright interiors, modern Japanese elements, and excellent Euro-Japanese casual cuisine, and transports you to modern day Tokyo. This concept blended with the Filipino market and became a sought after restaurant immediately.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atsushi Yoshizawa, a native of Japan, earned his experience in a well known coffee shop in Japan. His passion for coffee paved a way for him to receive his barista license in Milan, Italy. Mr. Yoshizawa visited the Philippines and saw the potential for a coffee shop concept.

He noticed the country’s versatility with food. There were many cuisines to chose from, and ingredients are sourced easily. Because of his expertise in the industry, he wanted to share his experiences that he was used to from Japan.

With Mr. Yoshizawa’s expertise and I-foods ability in brand building, Tokyo Café was launched in SM Mall of Asia in 2006. Serving delicious Euro-Japanese cuisine with a well lit, comfortable ambiance, and complimented with 5-star service reminiscent of a hotel outlet, without the hotel price tag.

Tokyo Café also highlights its beverage line. With Yoshi’s mastery in coffee, he scoured the country to handpick the best Arabica beans himself, and trained the staff personally on proper roasting and drip method, a meticulous process which consists of pouring hot water over ground coffee beans contained in a filter. As water seeps through the coffee, it absorbs the oils and essences. This gives you a new coffee experience that was pioneered at Tokyo Café.

by machomikemd Updated Aug 19, 2014

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

more Old pictures about the famous Highlands Steakhouse (before the renovation)

the popular highlands steakhouse, originally from the Tagaytay Highlands country club where the steakhouse made a name due to its succulent black angus steaks and magnificent view of the tagaytay ridge and taal lakes is now in the SM Mall of Asia.

Unortunately, the Popular Highlands Steakhouse in the SM Mall of Asia Complex is now newly refurbished and under new management. they tweaked on the menu and removed some dishes and added some more. The Highland's steakhouse is now not under the SM Group and was bought by a local businessman and the place had a makeover and is now more roomy but still has the provincial log cabin appeal. One of the changes is that they now have a different baked breads that are complimentary, not as good as the old brown breads as before and they now have additional dishes like foie gras, seafood aglio, western style salpicao, John Wayne Prime Rib and Jesse James Rib Eye Steak to name a few.

This tip and pictures will be on the old Highlands Steakhouse

    Hours M, T, W, Th, F, Sa, Su: 10:00AM - 10:00PM

Favorite Dish: what else but the Black Angus Cowboy Cut 30 ounce ribe eye steak of which it is alredy neatly cut into small pieces and you will cook via small grill powered by butane fuel it formerly cost 3,600 pesos before it closed and was renovated. They also have other old time favorites like the 24 ounce USDA Porterhouse Steak at 3,200 pesos an order (char grilled instead of being grilled at your table) also the Prime Rib (Bone In) roasted with Au Jus at 2,800 pesos an order for 18 ounces. Their complimentary bushman bread is also heavenly, unlike the newer bread of which is ordered from outside instead of being freshly baked in their premises.

Highlands Steakhouse: Newly Refurbished Highlands Steakhouse

by machomikemd Written Apr 4, 2013

the Popular Highlands Steakhouse in the SM Mall of Asia Complex is now newly refurbished and under new management. they tweaked on the menu and removed some dishes and added some more.

This tip will be on the new Highland's steakhouse.

    Hours M, T, W, Th, F, Sa, Su: 10:00AM - 10:00PM

Favorite Dish: like what I said, the new complimentary bread is not that tasty (see my old highland steakhouse tips) but the steaks are as good as ever and I have the Jesse James Rib Eye Steak 16 ounces at 1,800 pesos an order. the 26 ounce cowboy steak is priced at 3,800 pesos an order and assorted seafood dishes like the chilean sea bass at 1,400 pesos an order.

outside the so so complimentary bread chilean sea bass the 16 ounce jesse james rib eye steak more roomy interiors
