Batanguenos (local people of Batangas) have a reputation of being brave because of the 'Balisong'. This is a Philippine handmade fan-knife that is supposed to be found and purchased in Batangas and Taal is no exception. Being a former resident of the province, I know for a fact that women carry them in their bags for protection. I know that women will gonna use them for self-defense.

As a souvenir, you can buy them along the road especially when you are in Taal or in Barangay Balisong in Batangas. Most of this fan-knives were artistically designed. Take a pick and have a proof that you'd been to Taal.

What to buy: Fan-Knives or any knives of different size, use, and style.

What to pay: Affordable. Approximately $5-50 depending on the type of item.

    Women's Embroidered Gown

Philippine Barong and Saya (Gown) are very famous in Taal, Batangas. Barong can be worn by either women or men depending on the style. Available for men are dress shirts and for women are gowns with intricate cutwork and crochet insertions. Obviously, most of them are embroidered and handmade. Although nowadays, manufacturers paint them with colourful motiffs. On my recent trip to Taal, I bought a couple of men's barong painted with bamboo. The materials are mostly jusi, pina, or pineapple fibers.

This is a favourite for locals and non-residents alike for formal parties. Very elegant looking.

What to buy: Formal Dress Shirts for Men and Formal Embroidered Gown for Women

What to pay: $50 to $1000 per piece.
